Hey everyone, i just bought some new sunline superPE braid. It's excellent. Smooth, casts a mile. But every few casts or so i get a birds nest when i cast (i think theyre called wind knots). Theyre really annoying and have had to cut a huge amount of brand new braid off my reel because of them. Anyone tell me why they occur and how to stop them?

Thanks

I find they occur mostly when fishing really light lures or plastics and reeling a lot of loose slack. Sometimes you don't need to cut the line. Wet it abit with saliva and give each end of the line a strong pull and they often come loose. They are knot per say but more like a nest of line.

Welcome to fine braid.

i had a daiwa freams that gave me wind knots in both sunline super pe and power pro, so it could be the reel.

if you have 6lb sunline that can also be the problem because my friend bought the 6lb and kept getting wind knots, its too thin, 8lb is better choice.

Loose line on the spool is one of the main reasons.

Every few casts wind the braid back under tension.

Another main cause is having your spool over filled.

Have you noticed that you are getting less knots

now that you have cut some braid off?

Cheers,

Grant.

Sunline PE is part of the problem. I stopped buying it under 10lb because i (and many others) got wind knots time and time again. The 20lb+ stuff is fine for me though. Power Pro is generally pretty good stuff but if your looking at some quality line that seems to have far less wind knots then give Daiwa Sensor TD a go. Great stuff. Put it on my caldia (4lb) and have had no problems what so ever so far. Top braid!

Cheers, Tom

Grant is bang on the money, it's mostly because of slack loops on the reel or too muck line on the reel.

Sometimes the reel itself can compound the issue due to their line management systems or lack thereof.

Also make sure that when you flip the bail arm over it doesn't lay the line across the top of the spool as it closes. Happens with one of my reels and causes a wind knot next cast...

They occur because you have too much line on the reel or the line is twisted up too much. You want atleast 1.5mm under the spool lip and the line tapered evenly to larger as it goes down away from the spool lip. Check those 2 things and you shouldnt have any more problems.

I find if i pull on the knot the line just snaps. my spool isnt overfilled, got plenty of space left. ill try winding it back under tension to see if that helps. thanks guys

Haha the 'pull the knot trick'. I do it as a last resort when I cant undo a tangle or when Im frustrated. It works sometimes but usually it doesnt  PM me mate if your still having trouble..

I have a theory about wind knots. Allow me to explain.

Have you ever curled ribbon with scissors when wrapping Christmas presents? I think it's the same with casting braid in the wind. Let's say you cast Northly. Let's also say a strong wind is blowing east to west.As your braid passes the last guide of your rod, tension is occurring on the left (west) side of last eye. Like a ribbon on the blade of scissors, the line wants to curl up, then you get the wind knot.

The solution I have found is after you have casted, angle your rod to reduce the tension. Firstly, aim your rod at the lure as it travels to the water. This takes the tension off the top and bottom part of your guide. At the same time, angle your rod towards the direction the wind is blowing to. If your casting north and the wind is westerly, angle your rod after casting to the north west position. This takes the tension of the side of your guide.

Doing this I have found I don't get wind knots. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Luke

Some good advice here. I used to get wind knots all the time when I first switched to fishing with braid but now I never get them at all. Could be in how you cast, tension and wind as Luke has suggested, or how much or how your line has been put onto the spool. If it's happening often it's probably a mix of all of these.

Check also that the line has been put onto the spool tightly and that there are no loose loops on the spool. Hopefully you'll solve it and get back to happy fishing days again soon!

Absolutely agree Mike spool the line up properly. But try casting across a stiff 20 knot breeze for a while, the sort where your lure drifts strong left or right after casting. Unless I take some tension away from the line I get wind knots.

The size and intervals of the rod eyes also play an integral part in casting as does your casting motion, try not to flick the rod whilst casting. Was told that by a professional guide, worked for me.

lWhat type of reel is it.?

If shimano, then you need to use the little shims to get the right shape of line on the spool

http://www.henry-gilbey.com/blog/is-the-wrong-winding-shape-one-of-the-causes-of-wind-knots

Thanks for the share, interesting article. Next line I spool up I'll slightly load the front end of the spool and see how it goes.

I have three spinning reels, penn spinfisher SSV 3500, kastking triton 3000 and 4000. The penn has 250 metres of kastking flurocote 15lbs, and the larger reels 284 metres of kastking mega 8 15 and 20lbs.

As mentioned, overfilling the spool or line not being packed on tight enough is a common cause.

That being said, some lines are ALOT worse than others for it.

I've found the more smooth and subtle/limp the line - the greater chance for it to tangle around the guides or itself (e.g. why you never get wind knots in something stiff like fireline).

I tried sunline super PE about 7 years ago and had nothing but troubles (though many use it and love it).

I've had 3lb powerpro on for 3+ years and in that time not a single wind knot or guide wrap, so i can highly recommend that.

Also flip the bail over by hand, don't use the auto. Some of the problem may start from here. Fused lines are much worse for wind knots I've found, the power pro and cheap no name dyneema seem to have no problems.
