Yarraone Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I would just like to give everyone a TIP..Just because when you go down to your local ramp your bearings are fine.... This doesnt mean they will last if you decide to go away in the holidays... i went to Melbourne for xmas, and as I have never towed the boat quite that far before , I made the checks twice.. replaced and repacked bearings.. As well as all the other checks. I also took with me spare bearings and grease, as well as a spare hub and wheel nuts. As it turned out after 1400kms and driving in the heat over xmas i did hub.. No problem pulled over and replaced the hub and bearings in about 40min . On my way up to Newcastle this week I passed 6 boats either abandoned on the side of the road, or people with wheel bearing problems. and 5 on the return trip. Just because they are packed with grease or you have bearing buddies on them, doesn't mean they will never fail. In the heat of day they can get hot, more if you have the boat packed with extra weight with holiday gear. When they get hot they grease melts, and then the bearing will fail. STOP REVIVE AND SURVIVE... Not just for your self but to cool down and pump some grease in to those hubs if you have the bearing buddies. At least check them when you stop rather than find out when the wheel falls off.. Most of all stay safe and tight lines....
Yarraone Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 Dont forget "bearing buddies" dont stop problems they just help prevent them.. The idea is to make it easy to keep the grease up to the bearing....
