Kevy89
Hey Raiders, After some good rockwall action I have decided to invest a beach rod to target mulloway using mostly live baits. The rod I have decided on is the SHimano AerWave graphite composite 12ft 6-12kg. I am bit unsure on what reel to use. I havent got a massive budget to blow. The FinNor Rampage 8000 is on sale atm for $69 but I dont know what Spinning reel would suit this rod. I definately dont want an Alvey and I would look to spend around $150-$180 at the tops. What is your set up, how does it perform and what is your opinion on my suggested set up??? Any input would be great. Cheers! Kev
SMn
Hi mate did you get a rock hoping reel? I'm a dedicated Alvey man off the rocks and beach (lake/lagoon/kayak/boat hahaha), particularly when targeting anything larger than sambos or tailor. For a spinner setup make sure your reel can hold at least 300m of 20lb mono or the equivelent in braid. A retrieval rate of 4.0:1 is good for bait or 6.0:1 or so for spinning lures. Also a baitrunner model so you can free spool but have a drag set at the same time. Or you could just play it safe and get an Alvey 650berr matched to a snyder glas or wilson live fiber and have the confidence you've got the power (as long as chance doesn't show her frustrating face) to land that nice jew/king or frigate... Hahaha! Good luck! Sorry I'm not much help... Edited February 8, 2013 by SMn

Kev I prefer an overhead reel in this situation myself so I haven't looked into this greatly. If you're on a budget it might be better to grab a rod second hand off gum tree/ebay/classifieds, I'm really not a fan of cheap spinning reels. I'd advise you to look into the surfcasting reels from overseas but they might come in over budget. Shimano Baitrunner 8000D looks a much better option than the Fin Nor, from the one minute I spent looking. $239 at motackle, $145US (with free delivery) at reelfishingdeals, it's a US site. Jewhunter
I like a rod that can cast a truly big bait with. A lot of set ups will handle big fish but can they cast a 1/2kg squid or tailor head? My lighter outfit is a fsu 5120 with an ABU 7000. Heavier outfit is custom made, 12ft, don't know what it's rated but I fish 50lb through it on an ABU 10000. I can cast these a mile if needed & they stop anything. Cheers, Grant. eholdn
that abu 7000 and 10000 are overheads right ? did it take a fair bit of practise to cast with ? friend of a friend casts with a 9ft rod using an overhead and says the same thing about casing a mile. Jewhunter
They are overheads. The ABU 7000 would be the easiest to start with. They are the best to learn on as they are very forgiving. Cheers, Grant.
eholdn
and if i was a betting man, would that also be the non level wind kind ?

Jewhunter
Both the 7000 & the 10000 are level wind. I'm running braid off both for the beach & I put them on other rods for offshore. I use an old Daiwa sealine with 50lb mono for breakwalls, not that I fish them much anymore! Braid of a beach is a must for me. So much less drag from side sweep & the shore break.
