Nepean River Carp

As of late I have been heading down to the local (Nepean River) and trying my hand at carp fishing with some relative success. Out of the 4 or 5 times I have been we've landed about 15 fish with the biggest being around the 85-90cm mark. All of the fish were caught on either corn or bread fed onto a size 6 Gamakatsu baitholder hook. the rod i have been using is a 2-4Lb fdaiwa black label (superb) matched with a 2000 Freams and 4Lb crystal fireline. Considering the general concencus on carp and their evil ways, they are still a great fighting fish and are awesome to target whilst trying to teach beginner fisherman/woman the ropes. All fish were killed quickly and disposed of in an orderly fashion.

There is not much that i like better then being able to find use , for everything that i come across, if i was the one targeting carp, i would gut and clean the fish , then give it to someone that can make use of it, these days with allot of us coming from different backgrounds it would not be hard to find someone that will eat them , or else they would not be selling them for $5 per kilo. may be that someone can offer you some free veg from their garden for them? just an idea.

Some great fish caught on the light stuff. They're a lot of fun and offer a suitable diversion if nothing else wants to play. Ask around your mates and see if any of them are chasing reds. Carp fillets stored in the freezer heavily salted are spectacular snapper bait.

Cheers

Hey Funnierthanyou, they arent all that big but most do hold around the 45-55cm mark. Alot of catfish and eels were caught inbetween but it would still be fun with the kids. I usually go just below the rowing club off the green mat, asling as youre respectful (which i'm sure you are) and clean up after yourself then theyre fine with fishing off their mats and getting in the way if rowers come in aha.

Also, Leanordgid, alot of the carp and eels that i've caught have infact been given to people who looked interested or asked for them. I did advise that I myself probably wouldnt eat them but that if they had a taste/want/need for the catches then they were more than welcome to them.

Cheers for the replies everyone
