hi all i would like to share my story with you about my experience with a repower,,i have always wanted a 23 carribbean and saved and saved and finally got one,,, i loved it,, on the water every chance i got in her,, i slowly over time did the boat up to what i wanted, gutting the interior and desighning a new style of what i wanted,, a full retrim, decked out with sounder gps lights electric anchor winch ect ect ect, i bought a trailer for it so i can tow it,, then got to the point where the old mercruser was a bit to thirsty on fuel,, so i looked into a repower,, i ended up deciding on a volvo penta that i bought from the dealer in ingelburn for just under 25k, a full package injected v8 with duo prop drive all the add ons, computer anti corrosion system, nutra salt system ect, i was amazed with how she went, a 40knott top speed with 5 people in the boat, awesome pickup, great on fuel ect,, i have done 350 hours in the boat since repower and in that time i have BROKEN DOWN 40 times plus,,, yes 40 times,,, i have been through 4 coils at a cost of $420 and three fuel pumps at a cost of $1200,, multiple sencors, a set of injectors, the list goes on,, i often broke down a good 25 odd miles out to sea and had to wait to be towed home by coast guard,, not to mention the donation fee to the coast guard,,, the leg had corroded and been painted once,,, a trailer boar???? and had corroded again and looks disgusting,,, a total of 6 months in 3 years my boat was in the shop,,, i feel as though i was patch repaired untill warranty expired and now im not wanted to be known,,, what sort of service is this??also in all this time in the shop it was never water tested, the only time it got water tested was strait after the 12k re gel coat of the boat hull to bring her up looking brand new and she came back with a scratch from front to rear and a set of dented duo props, to the answer of, oh yeah we hit a log on the water test, no offer to fix at all,, i am now stuck with my boat that i have spent 3 years and an estimate of 70k on that i cant use as i have lost all faith in it,, so she just sits there in the driveway,,, i am telling you this, my story,,, for the reason of, anyone looking to repower there boat,,,,, a must is,, to look up the company, google the company and if any problems with them and the motor, google faults not the good stuff like specs ect,,, this happens all to much and its very hard to battle such huge companies legaly,,, i hope this helps someone out on not what to do,,,,

Hi, sorry to hear of your woes and the dealer should be the one fixing the issue, not the manufactuer. If you bought the engine from them that is how should be accountable and why are you paying for coils if under warranty as well as the other stuff, unless the fuel pump suffered for water ingestion I would think all you list should be covered by a warranty?

hey mate most of the work was covered under warranty, the ongoing thought was water in fuel, to the point i had new tanks and seperators fitted new lines new breathers ect but problems still accur

That is absolutely disgusting I cannot believe that they can get away with this. I must say however that I am not surprised. Almost everyone I know who has the heartache of owning a volvo has trouble. A mate of mine in the Navy works on their RHIBs most of which are or were powered by diesel volvo's has nothing at all good to say about them. They barely get an hour out of them before they have new troubles.

Mate I cant image to think about how pissed off you must be!

30yrs ago a mate of mine had a big Haines with a Volvo Penta inboard and I must of towed him back to the ramp a dozen times that I care to remember. Obviously not much has changed in 30yrs......they were unreliable back then and from your story the same today.

I'm with Carnivore.... name and shame the dealer! At the end of the day thats why there are forums on the internet to inform your fellow mate with similar minded interests. I would hate to see another Fishraider member get stung by this money hungry dealer giving you the palm off once your warranty had expired when you were obviously supplied a lemon by Volvo and the delaer obviously couldn't give two shits about how hard you worked to save up $25K.

I'd be documenting the whole thing and send a email to Ray Hadley @ 2GB or Tracey Grimshaw @ ACA, and CC the email to the dealer and Volvo Australia.

thanks mate, i like the idea of cc an e mail to them as well, im on to it as we speak,,,im also in the process of making a 4 metre long sticker for the side of my boat with a short stort of what happened, just so i can park it at busy ramps ect,,,

With all due respect. a few on this forum know i went down the same path with a new Tohatsu outboard! (re: Tohatsu seized) .Once sorted it never missed a beat and after some time, made me not so quick to dismiss the brand due to one bad experience. I sympathise with your plight as i did also once previously experience a similar bad experience however, i am the proud owner of a Volvo Penta powered boat and i am amazed how tough these engine and sterndrives are. They are very easy to service yourself, forgiving and reliable (most important!). Mine is a 96 model so i cant comment on the latest model engines but having only having outboards previously, i was apprehensive about sterndrive engines but as time goes on i am growing quite fond of these engines. Given my previous rotten run of luck, maybe it is karma! i hope you get it sorted painlessly and you get to experience boating without the woes.

i was the proud owner of one mate, i have never seen a sterndrive corrode so bad, and to be a trailer boat is even worse,, all the problems just keep coming, the older model might be good,, mine is great when its going,, when it runs its a pearler but repair costs are through the roof and servicing is a huge expence,, i was un able to servive myself even being a mechanic, as it would void warranty,, but not just the product has steered me away from the brand, the way the dealer delt with it is the main thing that will for the rest of my days spread the word of how rubbish it was and how much trouble i went through
