Took some overseas mates fishing today and spent the first 2 hours getting squid, lots of small ones. We decided to head to Taylors Bay to spin up some surface action but half way across we saw some one hooked up to a good fish. After watching him land it we threw out a live squid and bang a big hook up followed nice long run then the hook pulled. ok back to the spot with 2 squid out double hook up straight away . We had both fish on for about five minutes then both did the power dive and busted us off. Meanwhile the guy who was there first landed another good fish.

We were fishing 80lb braid and tight drag and yet again two more spankings. By this time the other guy took pity on us and asked would we like his smallest fish , hell yeah, 103cms came across the gunwhale!!!

The point of the post is during all this action I didnt thank him enough so if he's reading this Thanks mate Karma fish coming your way.

didnt take a photo of the fish as I knew my mates would claim it!

wow, that was pretty cool of him.

Bad luck with the bustoffs.

Maybe loosen your drag off a bit?

Better to let em run a bit more if you can than snap ya off.

Opposite mate if it's kings tighten it up haha don't give them an inch, but maybe need to bolt yourself to the boat haha.

Good to hear there's some solid kings around and I'm thinking my 50lb setup I've just bought won't be enough by the sounds of the reports lately haha

How the shit did you bust off with 80lb line? What leader? I'd assume at least 60lb leader and if thats the case, skull drag that fish out haha. Taylors bay is relatively shallow, so to speak and if you were near the edge its pretty reefy(I land fish there, absolute shit ton of snag spots). Should have locked up to keep them well away from anything. What size hook?

That's top stuff getting that many hookups but unfortunate on the bust ups but hot damn free kingfish, I guess the other chap saw your efforts were paid off. Seems interesting though, he gave you his smaller fish which was 103cm. Not very often you hear of schools of kings in the 1m range that close in...

Too many questions to ask, too tired to type them!

I drove past shortly after all this action had taken place and can confirm they got smashed by big fish. Nothing to do with gear failure or bad knots. Big fish plain and simple. There was an element of inexperience and probably shock on the anglers part, but these were big fish. There were numerous meter plus fish caught in the harbour yesterday. 114 was the biggest I know of.

Sarge - wait until you hook up to a meter plus King and then see if you can skull drag it in shallow water.... They pull hard mate! It's hard to explain the difference between how hard an 85cm King and a 1m + fish pull. you can lock the drag on serious reels (stellas etc) and they will still take line with ease. Often you will need to palm the spool and lock up the reel and then it is a question of wether your knots and terminal tackle are up to it.

By the sounds of it we might be in for a run of better fish.

Get out there and get in to them!

the gear I used was fin-nor offshore 6500 threadline on a matching 80lb fin-nor jigging rod 80 lb Sunline Jigger 8 colour coded braid and 100lb Sunline shock system leader. No knot failures and fish broke the leader on the bottom.

The bouy we got done over at is quite shallow , between 10 and 17 metres at best, and the fish were 8 metres down so we had the baits 6 metres deep.

as you can see the fish didnt have far to go to get to the bottom and this marker has a nasty amount of rock around it.

Hey fi5hing......pretty sure I was the only person giving away free kingfish on Thursday haha. White centre console with two on board? That was me. U were on the blue boat right?

For the record we hooked 8 kings at that spot, landed 3. 106cm, 103cm and 95cm.

I was using 20lb braid/25 leader and my brother was 15lb braid/leader.

Yes I could of landed more with heavier gear, but we were getting way more hits than any other boat and I think our lighter gear was why.

Plus it was way too much fun.

Wow!!! That is some pretty light gear sto land those metres kings!!! Well Done and not bad to land 3/8 hook-ups. May I ask what reels & rods were you guys using?

I was using shimano tcurve 5-10kg with shimano thunnus 6000.

My brother was rovex carbon tec 7lb with rovex crosa 6000. (I've never heard it either)

Just goes to show u don't need super expensive gear to catch good kings. (Obvious benefits if u do spend the money tho).
