mattwf Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Hey guys. Hit the harbour last thur with my brother who was up from Albury. On the water at 4am. Squid, slimeys and yakkas in the tank by 6am. Headed out to the colours for a while but nothing happening. Came back inside and started sounding out the markers. Decided to anchor up at one, even tho nothing showing, because we were sick of driving round. First bait down was a live slimey. Got smashed before it hit the bottom. After a short fight it busted me off on the mooring. Righto i tell my brother, we are staying here!!!!! Had a total of 8 hookups and boated 3. 106cm, 103cm and 95cm. They def prefered the slimeys in the beggining, but took live and dead squid and also yakkas later on. All caught between 8am and 10am. I was using 20lb braid with 25lb fluro leader. Always used to look at other boats and wonder why they were catching all the fish....well it was finally my time today and i loved every moment!!! Other boats around us but we were in front by far. Guys we were not using flashy or heavy gear so all you young fishermen out there dont stress about having cheap gear or anything like that. Matt.
tasksta Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Awesome haul mate, must have been a hoot. I can relate to "those" days but every dog gets his day sooner or later! I had a big w combo for three years before I bought "good gear", caught heaps of fish from yakkas to kings and never failed me. Nice work.
mattwf Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Ok I've got more pics to add but it only let me add 1. What am I missing? I know I should be able to add more.
mattwf Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Ok I just added my photos to the gallery. Check them out.

What sort of rig were you using for the livies?
mattwf Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Small running ball sinker to swivel with approx 1.5 leader. 4/0 gama live bait hook.
The Rev Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Nice report - glad to hear you landed your fish on 20lb braid. It gives me hope! I was out this morning with my 16 old son, landed a rat and was then run off by two larger kings. We were fishing with 50lb braid and a 60lb leader. Last week we lost 3 on 30lb braid. We will bd back next Thursday for another crack - hope you enjoyed dinner! The Rev
MrJ Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I was in the boat next to you when your first slimy got nailed. The three of us in our boat lost all our live and dead squid baits to pickers. So went off and fished the bust ups for basically nothing. Wish we'd stocked up on livies and come back to join you. Great haul mate. Well done
quintrex480 Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 awesome kings mate! and on 20lb tackle, that would have taken a lot of patience. Assume you were in pretty deep water then?
sbf1 Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Well done top catch. We used to get many good Kings & Jews from the harbour many years ago but in the last 10 years i have got none so i tend to not fish there. I was hoping you could she some light on where i could catch some live slimies and squid? That maybe a good starting point for me to get a nice kingie.
djbazzab Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Awesome fish! great photos too. That is quite the selection of live bait you collected, do they live happily together in the same tank or do they need to be separated? I'll be out there on Thursday hoping to do the same thing. Cheers, Baz.
bede Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 top report and great session, thanks foe sharing.

Mate I only have one spot that I catch slimies in and it's very rare that I catch them. Sometimes they just show up. When I'm catching yakkas I find the slimies are out wider. Squid can be caught in a lot of places. All I can say is keep an eye out for other boats casting squid jigs and u will get an idea of where they can be caught.

Cheers, Baz. Baz my bait tank is split in two for this exact reason. I prefer to keep things separate but it's only the slimies that are fussy. I always lose one or two cause I find that they need a lot of water and swimming space. I run 2 x 10L tanks now, but in my old 50L tank all of my bait could swim together no problems.
rikkigilbey Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Great report buddy! awesome fish! iv sent you a pm.
