reeseman
yeah, large juice bottle. The ones that are like a rectangle shape. Cut a H shape into it with a sharp knife and then bend the flaps back inwards. Put some bread in one side of it and a small rock to hold it down. And bring a shot gun when the ducks rock up. josamill
I am inconsistent at most fishing, but am pretty confident with poddy mullet. Generally can catch 4 - 10 in 20 mins. Whether you use a homemade trap or the clear plastic $10 traps from your local fishing store is probably not the issue. I had no luck until a bloke showed me how to 'bait' the trap.........as opposed to just shoving bread inside which yielded very little - well actually nothing. Looks like you are in Canberra, otherwise would have suggested a quick catch up to show you what works for me. First thing is to make sure they are around........tidal flats at high-ish tide are best........a few mangroves and yabbie/crab holes around. Polaroids and a quiet vibe.......no kids or dogs etc. Squeeze some fresh white bread in the water, then wave the cloudy, bready water around. Wait and look......do it a few times, and if no sign of them, you will need to move. Once you've located them.....get the trap down and move 4-5 metres away......it's fun to watch. I'll try to describe how I place the bread, because this is the clincher. The trap has a funnel shape where the mullet are supposed to swim in? On the outside of that hole, a cm or so up, press some fresh white bread down hard so it sticks to the plastic and is about the size of a 20c coin. It should stick really solidly. Grab another small lump, curl your finger inside the funnel and stick it to the inside edge but leave a little bit showing through the hole. Squeeze some more bread to make a cloud around the trap and back off. Hope this makes sense. Cheers
Guest Aussie007
dont harm the ducks we all have a role in life as for the poddys and ducks u will notice poddys will come closer to u than the ducks so keep the trap close to you but far enough the poddys will come in and feed u can use the $15 clear cylinder bait traps from tackle shops avoid the bloody crap 4 piece designed ones made by sure catch they fall to pieces now float your trap with a coke bottle or piece of foam u want the trap to float as close as possible to the surface even 15cm under is to low remove the sticker the clearer the bottle the better it works little things deter the poddys like bottle stickers place half a slice of bread in the trap it doesnt matter which end the bait goes to the bread will float once in the water now burley up the poddys so they are in a feeding freenze than toss the trap right on top of the fish where your burley is the fish will scatter before the trap lands the fish are use to it with leaves and branches falling into the water so u wont harm them now wait paitently the bread will lure the fish back to the trap within a few minutes once they start feeding again u will see the poddys flashing this means u have some in the trap u can either wait longer as poddys in a trap will attract more fish or u can pull in what u have and empty the trap keep in mind if your catching poddys from the shore neil down on the shores edge dont stand up or you'll spook them or stand up on a ledge and catch them i uploaded this video about a week ago i will upload another video showing my tecnique above and how i catch poddys when i fish the georges river next this spot has around 200-500 poddys of varying size one was so fat it got stuck in the sure catch bait trap hole lol

bombora
Key is really shallow; top of trap should just b below surface. Too deep, I reckon, is biggest mistake. Or catch em with a hook, so easy you can catch as many as you wish in minutes. But you need a tiny hook. And I mean tiny. I once won letter of the month from a Pommie fishing mag for defending Oz attitudes to carp. Prize was a big box of carp tackle (!). Included was a bunch of pre-tied hooks and traces. The line was one pound and two pound, the hooks, snelled onto the traces, were size 20 and size 22!!!!
pomey_git
thats the sort of things i used to use in rock pools as a wee lad. Stapo
I find if the ducks and sea gulls are a problem I use bread crumbs. The no name ones work fine and they last a fair while. After placing the trap in the water the crumbs form a milky trail for the poddies. Works on the bullies and lano's. But saying this sometimes they just wont go in the trap, I think they get a bit trap shy late in the season, don't really know, can be a bit frustrating at times but also good fun. elferoz777
I have had luck with the 15$ plastic trap and an opera house style yabbie trap. I mix dough to get them going and soak the bread in a bit of oil from a tuna can. Seems to work well for me
