duckegg Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Boys, Headed east yesterday to see if there were any dollies around the fads and see if I could break my marlin cherry. Got plenty of livies including slimies, small pillies and yakkas by about 7am and headed out. Water was still a bit cold at only 21.3c around the fad so I wasnt overly confident. Sure enough there were plenty of undersized rats around the fad but that was it. Decided to put out a couple of skirted lures and a bird teaser and head north. Bout an hour and a half later bird activity started to increase and I spotted the tell tale fin and tale. Trolled towards the fish and vzzzzzzzzzzz we're onto about a 90kg beakie. Had it on for about 2-3mins then pulled the hooks. At this stage we didnt care as we had raised a fish, hooked up and got a good look at him. We were high fivin each other like idiots. Set the spread out again and ten minutes later the other rig goes off. This time it was a fairly slow take, then the thing went nuts. Basically went the other side of the boat as we were trying to clear the other lines, jumped about 15m from the boat and proceeded to throw the hook also. That was the end our excitement unfortunately but was stoked to hook one of these suckers. Never been that enthused to be honest but I now understand what all the hype is about. That picture of a marling jumping that close to the boat will stay with me for a long time I reckon. BTW still cant buy me a legal kingie!!!!!! Water temp: 21.3c depth: 60 fathoms Johno
Hammer n tongs Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Great effort, have had the same happen to me the last couple of weeks, I guess it's good to be out there. What size lures were you using?
duckegg Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Great effort, have had the same happen to me the last couple of weeks, I guess it's good to be out there. What size lures were you using? Mate Was running only 2 skirts both about 7-8 inches. One was a black bart and one was a locally made jobbie both were pretty dark ie. black and green. Not that I am very experienced in this type of fishing but both fish did not muck around and smashed the lure pretty well straight away...appeared to be quite agressive. Johno
Hammer n tongs Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Guess you were in the right place at the right time, good to see they are aggressive. Can't wait for the seas to get better so I can go out and chase a beakie.
Scratchie Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Good work johno!!! I'd be rapped too if I hooked onto a beakie!!! And I agree, yeah sure it wold be great to land it but targeting it, hearing the rod scream off and watching it jump would be just as exciting!!! Cheers scratchie!!!
tasksta Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Great report. We hooked our first two weeks ago and lost it after almost two hours, but still cant beat the feeling and shock of finally hooking up and seeing it breach! For the record i have caught exactly zero legal kings this season....
duckegg Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 Thanks Boys now we've all got to cool our heels while this weather system moves on. This will also stuff up the fishing inside particularly for kings as the bait will disappear....
erroll Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Well done mate. Two hook ups in a row. That will ensure you get back on the job quickly. Good luck with it. Cheers
duckegg Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 Well done mate. Two hook ups in a row. That will ensure you get back on the job quickly. Good luck with it. Cheers Eroll. Got a wedding in the Hunter this weekend which is a bummer so no go for me at all this weekend. Funnily enough had my boat 12 months and just checked the engine hours i have clocked up. Bought it with 160 on the clock and up to 492 on the weekend. No wonder the boss hates the boat. Might try and do a phantom next week. With this rain i think the bigger kings will be pushed a little wider. All of the reports to date have been inside albeit spasmodic so lets see what happens. You going out this weekend? Johno
FISHARK Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Hi Duckegg good report mate far out two hook ups back to back that would have had the heart pumping , if you don't mind me asking how far out we're you when you got the first hit ?

You going out this weekend? Johno Not this weekend sadly mate. I have a few other commitments to attend to. I was thinking about hauling the boat up to PS for a few days to get amongst them up there. My mechanic prints me off a report that shows how I have spent my hours, got about the same hours actually but 3/4s of my time is trolling or idling forward down rigging. Good luck if you make it out, Sunday looks alright.
