arpie Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) Hi guysMichelle arrived on Sat & weather permitting, we were supposed to hit the water every day, chasing bream, flatties & whiting on topwater - and it very quickly became obvious that my shoulder had deteriorated badly, even since Rob & Gazza were here a couple of weeks back http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=67021 Much as I hated to admit it - there was no way I'd be fishing on Day 2 or any other til after the surgery, even if the weather was perfect! I found it very uncomfortable even just reaching for the rod from the rear rod holder - even casting & retrieving was difficult & my accuracy was up the creek - and I obviously couldn't drag the yak from the Estuary anymore either ....... so sadly, I have had to accept that my days of yak fishing is over for the time being, until after I have had the shoulder surgery in late Feb & had full rehabilitation! Keith & I went to see my ortho surgeon (who fixed my frozen shoulder NON SURGICALLY 10 years ago (and 2 days) since my last visit to him! Amazing! It has flown by! He identified an impingement off the rotator cuff that will require keyhole surgery to remedy (gribding some bone down to make the channel bigger for the tendon to not be aggravated against bone & all going well, I should be back doing what I like ...... within weeks (so long as frozen shoulder doesn't set in on IT! Apparently a common by product! ) IF he finds tendon damage whilst doing that - he will reattach the tendon, requiring a cut as well as the puncture holes .......so basically, if I wake up in a sling, he's done the tendon repair that may require up to 6 months rehab - if I wake up without a sling, it has just been the bone grind & it only requires up to 6 weeks rehab! I am now just praying that I haven't damaged the tendon further since the xray & ultrasound was done, as it is hurting WAY more than it was at the end of Nov, when they were done. Otherwise, IT will need to be repaired as well. SO ..... no more fishing for me for at least 2 months & possibly longer! Luckily, i have a buddy here in Forster who has a Hobie Adventure Island Tandem (it takes 2 people) and he has offered to take me out for a ride ....... if I give him some fishing tips! So sounds a terrific way of still getting out, even if I can't fish!! So there is SOME light on the horizon! Keep your fingers crossed for me that it is only the grinding required, not the tendon repair! I've even got to cancel my South West Rocks booking ........ again - I had to cancel last years due to my hip injury!! Not Fair! cheersRoberta I'll have to look at more DIY stuff to work on whilst I am off the water ....... or I could always dabble in a little At least Michelle caught some fish!! http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=67290&hl= Edited January 28, 2013 by Roberta
Jewhunter Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Good luck Roberta. Getting older sucks. My body is giving me all sorts of grief atm. I hope it goes well for you & that you are back fishing in no time. Cheers, Grant.
arpie Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 You too, Grant!! Doesn't it SUCK - this getting old!? My brother tore his ham string a couple of weeks ago & is taking a while to mend too! At least I retired 10 years ago, so have had 10 good years already!! Just make sure you are healthy enough to enjoy YOUR retirement, too!! If you are young & healthy - don't take it for granted!! It can change in a flash!! Good luck for tomorrow, mate - hope the surge isn't as bad as it has been already!! Who needs a pool??? cheers Roberta Love to Di & the kids
GreyNurse Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Sorry to read about your shoulder, Roberta. I had only a little taste of shoulder trouble a few years back when a resident at the aged care facility where I worked ultimately strained the rotator cuff in my right shoulder. Not her fault. She had dementia and would often stop suddenly when we walked around the facility holding hands. The injury took about two weeks to develop, and took about 3 months to recover from. In that time, it was difficult to even cast a line, let alone do any of the the regular household chores. Orthopods these days do some pretty amazing repair work, so chances are good for some kind of recovery. Hopefully a complete one in your case. In the meantime, I think we all like to read your DIY tips. You have a very clever and innovative mind. Good luck for the future, Nursie
big Neil Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Hey Roberta, hope that whatever ur procedure u can get back to what u love to do...and provide the rest of us with some more inspirational stories. Good luck, Neil.
PRED-ATOR Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 thats sad to hear Roberta, I truly hope everything goes well with the surgery. Do you think you will consider a peddle kayak instead of a paddle kayak for the future?
arpie Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 Thanks guys - it is going to be a pain, literally!! ,,,,,,Do you think you will consider a peddle kayak instead of a paddle kayak for the future?,,,,,, he, he, I mainly use a pedal yak already! Definitely would be worse with a paddle yak - so my 'hang up my paddle' is euphemistic! I still can't just lug it around like I used to before tho! It is the lifting & shoving that hurts the shoulder too. cheers Roberta
bassboy888 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Horrible news to hear roberta! hope you heal up quickly and can get back out and harass the bream soon.
Day's Fishin Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Sorry to hear that Roberta. I bet the fish will be happy though! Regards Jeff
arpie Posted January 29, 2013 Author Posted January 29, 2013 ... hope you heal up quickly and can get back out and harass the bream soon. ..... Thanks mate - you'll have to take over my role in the mean time! ..I bet the fish will be happy though! .... Watch out when I am 'back' ..... that is when they are usually 'going off' on topwater!
adjustedpete Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Perfect timing for that book thats in your head Roberta..
tide'n'knots Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 good luck roberta, I feel your pain. I have had rotor cuff problems most of my life and have to be very carful how i lift things so I dont tear the tendons etc, however mine is all ok at the moment and obviously havent had to have surgery yet like yourself , but unless you have had this problem it is hard to imagine the pain it causes when you reach to grab something ouch! hope your ok and back on the water soon. you are right - growing old sucks! pete
arpie Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 THanks, Pete & Pete!! he, he, Craigtempo reckons I should write a book too!! ..... but unless you have had this problem it is hard to imagine the pain it causes... Absolutely Pete - I can't believe how much worse it has become since Nov when the Xray/ultrasound was done - so hope I haven't done too much more damage (even tho I've probably only fished about 6-8 times since then), or I will be up for a 6 month recovery - and we are going to UK in June/July & I am supposed to be doing Wilderness Island end of May for a week as my 60th birthday pressie! You are lucky yours 'comes & goes' ....... sort of!! One day, just get it fixed, before it gets too bad! Mostly Keyhole surgery these days. Even pressing down on things (slicing stuff) hurts! Ridiculous! Picking up the kettle with water in it (ok if empty!) Ah well, it has to be done! cheers Roberta
tide'n'knots Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 yeah mine is fine as long as I dont do anything stupid and remember that there is a problem. An orthopedic surgeon told me that to fix my problem they woud have to shave some off my shoulder blade to allow the tendons and ligaments to pass through the joint as there wasnt proper space there and when I forget the problem and try to lift something heavy( usually above my head is the problem) it simply pinches and tears the tendons. Mine has been fixed with physio but it really is only a band aid fix so consequently I have had to change professions to something less physically demanding ( if it gets any less I wont be able to call it work SHH!) when he told me it was 6months off work in rehab I laughed and said thats 12mths if i fix both shoulders so he said change professions, so now i work in a club and love it, nowhere near as stressful as working for yourself and they actually pay me to take holidays and when I am sick I stay home and they pay me for that too!! should have done it years earlier! hope your better soon and back giving the bream and blackies a hiding! pete p.s. say gday to keith for me.
marcel haber Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Hope all goes well with the surgery - i know where you are coming from .I live with the aches and pains day in and day out.
