Keeping youngsters interested

Any action is good action when kids are involved, my tip to you is use light tackle, small hooks and small sinkers. For bait use peeled prawns cut in half and small pieces of pilchard fillet... Burley is key to attracting fish.

It can't just be a one off thing, once a month gets it into their veins good.

Have fun.

I usually target trevally this time of year with the young ones. Light running sinker and plenty if burly, throwing out dry chook pellets keeps the kids entertained ( does end up in a bit of a mess though)

Oh year don't expect to do much fishing your self, and move spots if these no action after 15-20 min. The kids get bored pretty easy.

it all depends on how young the kids are, but i have a 3 and a 5 year old and they cant get enough of collecting yabbies.

its also a good idea if you can fish of the yabby bank. they can run around and get dirty and when you hook a fish get the kids to wind it in..but the most import part is FOOD, take heaps....

I have just started taking my daughter out now and again. She will be 3 in March. I tend to target small snapper in Middle Harbour. Lots of burley and small hooks. I generally need help on the boat with me (her mum or aunty) as her attention span is small, but we have fun... and that is all that counts.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot... If its a girl, the rod HAS to be pink.

I agree with the comment 'don't expect to do much fishing yourself'. When you take a young (under 10) kid fishing the first few times, the most rewarding trips involve one rod, and focussing totally on them. Once you slip into your own fishing zone, that's when the kids get bored and you get frustrated. Light gear, fresh bait (nippers ideal), no wind, twisties, lemonade, a few funny stories. good luck!

Thanks guys. It was a bit of a hit. I see what you mean about not fishin your self. Spent a lot of time baiting up and burleying (as advised, cheers for that). Foubd the yakkas were on the bite so put a small wasabi rig and he was smashing them up to 3 at a time. Not bad from a warf. The mrs was picking up small stuff to. And I did manage to sneak in my first shark over here. A 4 foot bronze whaler. Over the moon. Thanks again guys. :)
