Don_
I'm looking to buy a new rod and reel combo as a present for a mate. Budget is $300 max! Its going to be used mainly for flicking plastics around the harbour for salmon, bonitos etc.. It will be spooled up with 6 lb braid. What would everyone recommend for this budget? Thanks in advance.Don

Don_
I was looking at the Shimano symmetre matched with a Berkley Dropshot. How does the Pfluger Trion compare to the Berkley Dropshot? Thanks for the response mate.
LungFai
Shimano Aernos 2500FA (comes with spare spool so you can switch) 150ish Shimano T-Curve 703 3-5kg spin 150ish Crap forgot the braid.....pretty sure you should have some left over to get some braid if you shop smart Edited February 12, 2013 by LungFai
slabslinger
Got kitted up at Xmas time at the local for the same budget with a Symetre 2500 on a Shimano Raider 6101 SP rod, . Very happy. Went 15lb on the braid and handles it fine, mostly chucking around metal slices for bonnies and sambos off wharves.
sam0
I got the 2-5kg Shimano raider and I love it. I got the Shimano stradic 2500 on it. Got the stradic much cheaper then rrp after a little negotiating so worked out well.

foolforjesus
I got a Pflueger trion 7" 2-4kg 1 piece a few weeks ago as a second rod, only cost $99. I have to say it really is a good rod, added with the price tag, you can't go wrong with one of these in my opinion!
Don_
I think I'm going to get the Pflueger Trion 7" 2-4kg with the Shimano Symmetre. Would the 3000 size suit that rod or is it better suited to the 2500?
LungFai
Personally, i'd pair it with the 2500, but there really isn't that much difference between 2500 and the 3000. As for the Rod, 1 pieces are a pain to transport
foolforjesus
Good call Mate. I would say a 2500 would be better. I matched it with a 2000 which is perfect, so a 3000 might be overkill. As for getting a 1 piece, they had no 2 piece rods in stock. I usually steer away from 1 piece rods for transport purposes, but to be honest, at 7" it ain't that bad. I think I'm going to get the Pflueger Trion 7" 2-4kg with the Shimano Symmetre. Would the 3000 size suit that rod or is it better suited to the 2500?
