Easing back pain

Hi raiders

Unless youve been crippled by a back injury you may never be able to comprehend how much it can impede your movement. Having injured my back late last year, the injury being a bulging disc, I went thru a learning process of things I could and couldn't do. Awareness was a big thing, posture and stance also.

I just wanted to share a simple stretch that is good at easing back pain.

Stretching your hamstrings for 15 seconds whilst breathing in thru your nose and out thru your mouth allows you to bend more freely whilst reducing the bend in your spine and in turn less pressure on your injured disc. This is by no means a cure, and I state again only for reducing the bend in the spine which will reduce pain for doing simple things like putting your shoes on, cutting your toe nails.

G'day Fishingphase

Yeah a great little stretch that one. I just had to take the fusion option, only way ill see the boat again.

But I got given a tool by portarecovery.com.au. Can't remember the name of it but my Physio loves it. Helps to stretch your back just the right amount. Here's the picpost-16011-136277942412_thumb.jpg

A mate of mine had the fusing operation done, it limits his twisting motion... Thanks for showing me that Leo, I will look into it.

I suffered back pain from the age of 18 until I was 41. No major structural damage, a couple of bulging discs, muscle spasms, and nerve pain, debilitating at times and going out on a boat would mess me up for weeks. I bought a book called whartons back book, and started doing the stretches in it, after a month or two my back got a lot better, started running and doing weights again no back trouble for the last three years. Stretching the hamstrings, quads, hip abductors and adductors, psoas, groin and glutes ( all the muscles through the upper legs, pelvis and lower back) has worked wonders for me. If I feel pain coming on I get straight into the stretches. Losing a few kgs and stretching are a must provided you haven't got major structural damage

I get back pains often, I find the only thing that really helps is time the weekend away from work and rest. I'm relatively fit. The worst thing is as you said just above, sitting down. Long drives destroy me. I recall coming home a few weeks ago from a fair drive from Kiama. I tried to go to sleep, I couldn't even lay down. If I tried to lay down my mid to lower back felt so cramped and hurt pretty bad. Shit go is I'm only 25 and I follow all the safe lifting techniques and this shit still happens.

I injured mine barefooting and the pain comes and goes in patches this past weekend it played up to the point i couldnt use the clutch to change gears luckily i can change gears clutchless on the 4wd the only way i can ease the pain is to lay on my back on a dead flat surface but the book fozzy has suggested may need to be looked into further

An important role in coming from a back injury is re-education thru a physiotherapist. Physiotherapy is an applied science that was entirely sceptical about until i was rehabilitated, they give you the necessary tools to get on with life, I definetly suggest you get yourself booked in and sorted, the benefit will far outweigh the cost, unless your injury is extreme.

I have lived with mine for eighteen years now. I have learnt too work around the injury and up untill the weekend have had no considerable discomfort for three years losing some excess weight and regular exercise helped ease the problem
