Guest mike2153
So after fi ding out some info on here about possibly catching bonito, kings etc. I decided to give catching live bait a go and see whjat happens. Loaded the rods up with the missus and the kayaks and headed out to Tunks park in Cammeray. Threw some tuna areound the wharf and the yakkas came running. first drop of the sabiki and caught a yakka. Missus said to me 'his to small lets chuck him back and get a bigger one' (seeing as I don't have live tank or anything to keep them alive I was going to catch them as I needed them). So back he went then it took me a full hour!!! to get another one, so I had my nice sized yakka and walked down to chuck him on the hook but dropped him straight into the drink and off he went. Red faced I decided to get another one by this time I was getting pretty over it. Fished for the yakkas for another hour and got nothing even though I could see the little buggers but they wouldn't take the bloddy pilchards. So after not being able to get another yakka no matter what I tried and what I did we chucked the yaks in and headed out. Fished with Hawkesbury prawns, dead yakka from the bait shop. Trolled around with a full dead yakka and a half yakka on the other rod. No bites no nibbles nothing. Ended up catching 2 bream about the size of your pinkie, a baby snapper and a barely legal flounder which went straight back in. The wind and choppy water just turned the kayaking into a nightmare and the missus had to actually stop and head to shore since she couldn't paddle against the wind and I had to drive and pick her up in the car. Pretty crappy day all up, next time, more burley get a livey then get a fish sounder and use that to find the schools.

rjc123
Middle Harbour has been slow for me the last 3 weeks... The pelagics are definitely around but unpredictable. The only spot i've has them consistantly at is mouth of Bantry Bay. Bonnies, frigates, bigger tailor and kings. Haven't landed one of the kings though... They're big fish and 10lb braid aint enough to stop them... There's jew around if you know where to look. Hopefully over the next few weeks things should pick up. Even my neverfail bream spots are very quiet at the moment... Cheers, Tom
Guest mike2153
I was baiting the sabiki rig with pilchards and still they don't want a bar of it... So frustrating when you can see the bloody things by the dozens but they wont bite! I really need to get a sounder to find the schoold of fish. Is this how everyone does it? I keep my eyes open for fishy looking spots, birds, bait fish jumping etc but can never find anything?
Paul
"seeing as I don't have live tank or anything to keep them alive I was going to catch them as I needed them" Make yourself a small bait tube. Costs less than a livewell, takes up less space and you can hang it on the side of your yak and you don't need batteries to run it
SMn
Head winds can definitely ruin your day in the yak. I've been contemplating a small leccy setup for mine, with a sounder/gps hooked to the battery, for those times when your just battling to make way or flat out buggered on the trip back. But the mods required and price are a bit daunting. At least you got a couple of fish, I've been relegated to the beach for the last 2 weeks as the seas were just to big at my local. Fished the late night high tide friday and saturday, about 4hrs each and didn't even get a bite! Hope you nail something more substantial next time! Guest mike2153
Yea I have thought about getting a leccy but as you said the price and set-up has put me off. As for the beach as soon as I get a rod that can actually cast then ill go every week I love the beach fishing but its not much fun when you can cast your 7ft light gear rod much further than a beach rod. SMn
Yeh the beach is my number 1, that's how I got addicted to fishing. But can be massively frustrating finding the fish sometimes, where as the yak can go places you imagine the fish are, hahaha. I use Alveys off the beach, rocks and yak. If your looking for a robust beach outfit that casts far (after a bit of practice) you can get fairly cheap combos which suit beach fishing to a tee!
