Fuel Consumption

Just weighing up whether to buy a used boat with a 2002 Mercury 140 V6 or one with a 2007 Mercury 150 hp direct injection.

I like the set up of the boat with the 140 and it is a few grand cheaper but the lure of fuel economy makes me think the DI is the best way to go.

I will be using it to do offshore reef fishing and some trolling with the occaisional trip to the shelf (around 28ks out).

Is there much difference in fuel economy?

HI, if they are the same boat the DI will use about half the fuel at the end of a normal days boating. At different RPMs the difference can be more or less but considering the average user spends time at different RPMs a safe rule of thumb is about 50% less fuel with a clean tech engine vs an old tech engine. Now if the boats are different that can greatly affect fuel economy because some hulls are more efficient than other hulls and the difference can be alot.

What boats are they?

Cheers,

Huey.

there will be a much bigger gap between fuel used ,i went from 2 stroke to DFI and my range has pretty much doubled ,thats @ all rpms combined ,if mostly on the troll id say even more ,but i happen to like going fast too so ,if your blasting out then trolling it would be a fair amount with the motor plugged in i get Litres/Hr , fuel left and range km left , any new tech motor will increase your fuel economy. oh i've dropped 10hp in size & only lost about 5knots at WOT . go with the newer motor if ya going to keep it for a while.
