Tohatsu MD50 TLDI

Hi Guys,

had a great day out on Friday on Botany Bay, got amongst the Flatties big time!

Now for the bad news, broke a reed on our old faithful Mariner Magnum 40.

Now this donk is 22 years old and we were thinking maybe its time for a new motor.

The hull will take up to a 50HP, so, after reading up a bit, we were thinking of either a Tohatsu MD50TLDI or an ETEC 50

So guys - over to you for comments, anyone with experience with either motor....pros and cons based on real Raider experience? We average about 150 hours a year

Looking forward to your considered advice

Many thanks in advance

Chris

gee looking at the specs the tohatsu 50 weighs just 93.5kg and is a 3 cylinder di,the etec 50 weighs 108kg and is a 2 cylinder di,wait for huey to read your post and im sure he will give a expert opinion on the differance between both these outboards, its strange to me the weight difference considering the extra cylinder of the tohatsu, also the displacment of the tohatsu as a 3 cylinder is 697cc versus 864cc of the 2 cylinder etec ,the next best thing these days when buying a new motor is to make sure your dealer is switched onto the product he is selling and there service dept know what they are doing with rigging and testing and future services,I will be very interested what huey says but if the price fits i'd go the etec for sure, and the best guy with etecs in aus in my opinion is huey and i own a mercs lol cheers dunc333

Hi Chris, I choose to stock and sell Evinrude for a reason, I believe they are the best and tick all the boxes for the owner from performance, reliabilty, low running costs, best warranty, lowest ownership costs, SST prop standard and more. Nothing wrong with the Tohatsu, but they are a pretty complicated little engine with compressor, belt, injectors ECU and more. The E-TEC system is the simpliest clean engine with the least moving parts and being an overengineered engine they are designed to last. The 50HP is the V4 basically chopped in half so the piston and conrods are the same as a 130HP, the gearbox is heavy duty and again the 50HP uses the same prop as a 130HP so again overengineered. At the end of the day you would be happy with both, I have used the Tohatsu TLDI and they run OK, but the E50 will outperform it, cost less to own and has the best factory backed warranty in the business.

PM me if you are interested in learning more and getting Raider pricing.

Cheers,

Huey.
