Spin Rod For Rock Fishing.

Recommended Posts

Iam in process of buying another spin rod for rock fishing. I have a current setup of a Fin Nor 10ft 10-15kg with Spheros 8000 reel 50lb braid, which has been so far real good, the last couple of months I have caught many kings around 65-75cm with ease, even lifting up from rocks. But not sure what setup I need for 1m+ kings. Would another setup like i have current be ideal or should I go heavier like 20kg rod, larger size reel. I did notice with my current setup not as much drag used as the rod does most of the work.

Any sugestions on Rods. Only after 10ft at moment. Only rod so far which looks good is the Nitro Rockstar but its $400 was seeing if any cheaper option, which will do the same job.

I'm a bit old fashioned but I always used a fast taper 8 or nine wrap overhead rod for this stuff.

Coupled with a seascape or Abu7000 or Shimano triton Mag/

What you need is a crowbar with a flicky tip and a reel with guts!

What is out the ATM guys?

Hi mate,

I am in a similar situation to you. I currently use a Daiwa SJ106MH (20-30lb) and Biomaster SW6000 as my heavy spin outfit. I've looked for a heavier10ft+ outfit and have come across the Black Hole Magic Eye 1062S which would definitely handle 50-80lb line, but for specifically targeting big kings with lures, I now think a heavy popping rod in the 8-9ft range would be better. It would work big popper better and be more effective in fighting big kings.

Your current outfit should handle kings to 1m (I've landed kings to 97cm on my outfit), just a question of whether you want to specialise in going for the really big ones.

I gotta borrow an overhead reel and practice using, I have never used before. But they do seem the go on bigger fish.

Something light that won't tire you as quickly, but is strong at the same time, something not to pricey because it going to cop a bit of abuse... Ugly stick platinum, around $120, and an 8000 stradic.

Fishingphase

Your right about abuse, my current setup expecially the rod where

I put it in holes and cracks in the rocks is pretty bad. I will check out the Ugly stick range.

That rod looks awesome, first time I hear of those rods but that rod only weighs 340 gram, thats dam light and can use all day. Defintley will check that one out. I know what you mean about using the 8ft - 9ft rods only issue today I was out on the rocks and my second setup iam using until I get the next setup sorted was a 8ft rod. I lost 3 kingfish under the rock ledge infront of me, as with the bend in the rod makes so short. Its a hard choice now you still got me thinking about the 9ft one still.

The Black Hole Magic Eye is awesome but not cheap! You're looking at c.$600.

With the heavy popping rods though, they are a lot more powerful, especially if you're fishing heavy braid on a reel that can handle it, which should allow you to turn them and force them up at the rocks (in most cases anyway).

i have 2 set ups for targeting big kings off the stones

for throwing big poppers i have an 18000 stella with 80lb braid (but the saragosa is a good cheaper option) on an 8 foot XT popping rod. when fishing that heavy i dont like anything longer then about 8 foot because its to to much to handle with heavy drag running through a longer rod.

and ballooning live bonito, frigates and mack tuna i had a TLD50 (doubles as a game reel but a TLD25 o 30 would do the job) matched with a wilson live fiber 9'6 LBG stick.

both combos are cabible of stopping any king with a bit of luck but i have still been smoked on both combos.

That's some good gear and those kings still have the power to get away sometimes is amazing. I might aim for the 9ft to 10ft for live baiting and ballooning have purchased the reel already so might go in the shops to try on a couple of rods to see the balance.
