Cracker day on Botany Bay

Jenno 64's recent report re catching lizards in Botany Bay inspired me to head out there today in search of the humble lizard. With a low tide around 8.00 am I had about an hour and a half of the run-out to fish before trying the run-up. The run-out was comparatively quiet with two low 40s fish dropped at the boat before a 50 cm model stayed hooked and came aboard. A couple of missed hits and that was it. Things were looking a bit grim.

I headed off out to the front of the bay at low tide to see if there were any kings around the buoys or any surface fish out to play. Sadly, neither were in evidence. A cup of coffee and a bacon and egg roll at Kurnell were in order. If you haven't tried the bacon and egg rolls over there yet you are missing out! Best value breakfast going.

About an hour and a half after low tide I moved to an area where the water was beginning to push its way over the flats. I targeted the slightly deeper channels leading up into the flats and enjoyed some fantastic soft plastics fishing over the next three hours. In total I landed 15 legal fish and dropped at least 10 more. I was using a 1/4 oz jighead and a 3" Z Mann Minnowz in the black and gold colour for the first 10 fish and a copper colour for the next 5. Biggest fish was 61 cm, two were 50 cm and there were 5 from 45-48 cm. I kept those ones to feed the family a couple of times and released anything under 45 (7 in total). All of the fish were caught in water less than a metre deep. The fish seemed to be biting quite shyly resulting in a lot of missed hookups. I ended up trying to let them play with the plastic for a bit before attempting to set the hook. The biggest fish had the jighead well down its throat as a result of this.

Perseverance paid big dividends today!

Some of those fillets were crumbed in Panko breadcrumbs and made a delicious meal with a green salad last night. I'll put my fresh flathead up against those $50 fish shop ones any day. I know when they were caught and that they were killed and iced down immediately after capture. I reckon my fresh ones must be worth a lot more than $50 a kilo!!

And more importantly, about this bacon and egg roll, exactly where at kurnell can i find it?

Cheers, Baz.

Drive your boat into the beach near the rock groyne just east on the oil wharf. The cafe is on the corner across the road.

$50 a kg for Flatty fillets and people are still buying it. Is it just another Sydney thing. Who is getting the big cut. Drove up Nth Qld a few years back and once over the boarder fish and chips cost a few bucks like in the old days
