wrek3000 Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Planning a 2 day trip to Forster with the wife and her family just wondering if dropping a trap could find me a muddy or two.Never been to the area but thought it might be a short escape from work and somewhere to take the in-laws.Im a nut when it comes to dropping a line so i thought it might be worthwhile for the both of us...( me fish, her can build sand castles..") ) but back to the point, are there mud crabs in Wallis Lake, and just asking is there anywhere i should be looking.i know ill spend the day throwing sp's but i know the other half would care for more:) Thanks guys

I managed to eye a massive one on the weekend, in Pipers Bay. Good luck!
tinny1 Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 There up there for sure i have seen claws on the banks amongst the mangroves around green point and the back of Lani's caravan park , but i reckon the hit rate will be higher on the blue swimmers , good luck mate rgds Mark "FLICKINLURES"
Justin80 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Just got back from a weekend in Smiths Lake, which is a very short drive South of Wallis but much smaller. I know the locals regularly catch large crabs, both Blue Swimmer and Mud, in pots placed around the lake. There are plenty of flathead in the lake also. You can wade out almost to the middle and flick plastics around no problem. I've not fished Wallis Lake, but if you're not having much luck try the short drive down to Smiths and see if you can't get a few crab for the pot. Also, the entrance to the lake is open to the sea at the moment and is very productive. I dropped (much to my girlfriends amusement) some nice tailor there off the beach, so there are plenty of options to try. Good luck. Very hard to beat fresh mud crab. Justin.
arpie Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I've never actually targeted them myself, but I have spotted a couple 'wallowing' in the shallows of the bays off any of the deeper water areas when in my yak. Try any of the shallow mangrove lined bays. I've seen plenty 'in the pot' that were taken from the shallows near Great Lakes Caravan Park that other people have caught!! They are pretty strict on how many pots/nets that you can put out - so make sure they are properly marked - and don't put any in busy water ways or near deep faster water where they can be washed out into where boats can 'catch' them!
