DanRob
About this time last week I posted in fishing chat asking for advice regarding might fishing at middle harbour and I thought I'll follow up with a report. After dinner on say night went to launch the tinny over at tunks park. We cruised straight out to the spit for some squid but spent a few hours to no avail. A bit more time and research is going to be needed for squid! By about midnight we pulled the pin on the squid and headed over to northbridge get some yakkas- finally we can do that relatively reliably. After an hour or so there we tried the spit drifting with a livey but not much going on there. So headed to sugarloaf bay to anchor up and throw out some baits. We got a few taps but not a hook up. By this stage it was getting pretty cold and the early morning boats were heading out. So for a complete night fishing I managed to get a total of zero fish. Now for some sad reason I am still keen to go out, maybe not another all nighter anytime soon End of the day we had a bit of fun mucking around in the newly bought boat and started to get a feel for fishing in the harbour from a boat. Hopefully with a few more hours of lines in the water and hours scrolling through this great forum I'll have something proper to post about. But until then there is always another fish in the sea! Ps. Thanks Tom from this forum for the head up with middle harbour. Dan
svsolaris
Hang in there mate, you'll be richly rewarded for persisting. I fish in MH land based and am a newbie but have caught bream, pike, tailor, salmon and squid. For squid, i think you'll have more success at the shallow end of the bays. For larger fish, a good bucket of burley and a fish finder will make a big difference. But mostly I find either targeting a single species (and moving around) or varying the techniques (if staying put) works best. Also I'm not sur what others here think but I find The Spit overrated... Next time try Northbridge for squid on a luminescent prawn lure, it's been good to me.
aussieflash
Always keep moving to better the odds.Drifting is a great way to find a good spot.If anchoring berley up like mad. Should of skipped dinner and fished dusk.Best times are dawn, dusk, and change of tides......usually..
zen801
I didn't see your earlier post for advice. I have and do fish MH at night a lot usually. It's a long night and only really productive a few hours either side of a high or low tide. On a typical night I would go out before sunset and get yakkas then at sunset flick for squid. I like a high or low tide within a few hours after sunset that way I can fish the prime time and be home at an early time say 12 or 1am. If I had a bigger boat I would stay put a livey out drink a few bourbons and crash for a few hours. Wake up and fish for kings or Jews again in the morning. Night time it's really on mulloway your fishing for and the odd big flathead or tailor. You must have good bait. As I learnt a few weeks ago when you know the Jews are under the boat but being picky then get out some SP and have a flick/jig. Forget fishing at the actual spit bridge at night for anything other than bait. jig the bottom around The spit for squid. Jews hang in the deeper water that is a bit calmer in the bays either side. Find a good mooring and settle in with a few rods out with different baits. I will be out for a night Jew sess this coming new moon period. I would be happy to show you a few spots etc if your out there on the water on the night. Mike

Scratchie
The nights you fish for nothing, make the rewarding nights even better! Look at the positive, at least you got out and wet a line! Good luck on your next trip! Cheers scratchie!!!
