Yowie Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 (edited) Fished the deep off Lilli Pilli early this morning, a bit of contrast to last week, though in a different location. 1 just legal reddie and 1 trevally not much bigger. About 3 throw back reddies and that was it. Pumped some nippers and drifted various places for only 2 whiting, 30 and 36cm, and that took some time to catch them. Bait stealing toads everywhere. Was just about to head home when I saw fish splashing over the sandbank to the east of the ballast heap, water was 1 to 2 metres deep. Salmon by the dozens feeding on tiny baitfish. Threw a metal lure out and they were hungry. Pulled out 4 and dropped a few, then the rain pissed down, so I headed for home. Not big fish, from 40 to 50cm, and the smaller ones had a few light brown spots along the sides indicating they are sub-adult size. Good fun on light gear. Edited June 12, 2013 by yowie

Well Chris, I kept 2 of the smallest, one for me and left one for mum, will cook it up and see what happens. The smaller ones are not too bad to eat, when they are heading to 60cm or bigger, not that good at all. There were dozens of them, in one large area east of the ballast heap, swimming over the flats at high speed and splashing in patches. I was keeping an eye out for the rain, but watching for the next bust-up I missed the rain sneak up behind me, and the sky fell on top of me. Ha ha. Dave.
Yowie Posted June 12, 2013 Author Posted June 12, 2013 Nice catch mate, it's really slowing down now so well done on getting a feed Now that the water has cleared up since the rain from a week ago, the fish will slow down. As I drifted over the flats, there was nothing to see swimming about, apart from spooking a couple of flatties that were buried in the sand. No even a bite over Lilli Pilli flats, except for toads. The whiting I caught were along the main channel flats. No yellowtail in the deep water, usually manage to catch a couple at first light. Did not see anything splashing about the deep water off Lilli Pilli. The water temperature is dropping, though still a bit warmer at Wanda Beach over the weekend when I had a swim there.
