35 or 40hp max?

Hi,

The compliance plate on my 4.0m Stacer shows Maximum 35hp but beside it is stamped "40" (see pic below). Does this mean I can safely/legally fit a 40hp outboard? I currently have a 25hp Yamaha, which runs fine but I would like more power and a 40 seems the way to go.

Thanks,

Hi, an insurance company will go with the 35HP, anyone could of punched in that 40HP and means nothing. Now if you are not insured you could fit anything you like, within reason. I know of some 30HP outboards that outperform some 40HPs so fit the right 30HP and it will offer more performance than the current outboard and you will not have an issue if you have an accident and trust me even if you are not insured of you have an accident and hurt someone I would hate to be in your shoes if you fit a 40HP to that boat with that compliance plate.

Cheers,

Huey.

Thanks Huey,

I think you might have suggested before that a newer 30hp outboard might have more grunt than my '94 25hp Yamaha. I assume you mean an Evinrude ETEC??

Could you please PM me a price on a 30hp ETEC with power trim/tilt, fitted? And would you consider a trade-in on my Yammy?

I get 20 knots at WOT with the 25hp Yammy, sometimes 22 knots with the Hawkesbury tide but I prefer to back off the throttle a bit and run at 18 knots to treat the engine more kindly. (I don't have a tacho). What do you think I could get with a 30hp ETEC? I would really like to improve the run time from Apple Tree Bay to Broken Bay!

Thanks,

Baz

Hi Baz, yes that is one of the STRONG 30HPs, if not the strongest 30HPs on the market and I will send you a PM about upgrading to either a new one or we have a very low hour, like new 30HP that the guy has upgraded to a 40HP.

You will see an increase in speed, but the noise, emissions and fuel economy will be a HUGE improvement over your old carby engine.

Cheers,

Huey.

id be going as huey says with the 35 and consider the 40 a addition by a previous owner

its all in the licence book we had to read to get our licences

page 12 bottom left

the fine for exceeding the compliance plate is $500 i cant remember how many penalty units it is

What engine power does

the boat need?

Boats have both minimum power needs and

maximum power limitations. Don’t overpower a

boat to gain more speed – a bigger engine may be

unsafe by unbalancing the boat and lowering the

freeboard.

it is an offence to fit an engine that

exceeds the manufacturer’s specifications.

Guest Aussie007

makes you think if the manufacturer stamped the 40 they would have used the same size stamps for the serial number

u can youtube 25hp vs 30hp on ebay and see the clear difference in power and speed
