zaki10
Hi guys, Just wanted to post and see other people's pov on this. I have been going down to my usual spot to fish out calamari, I sometimes have luck and walk out with a nice bag full but have noticed that when its really cold, the water is a bit choppy there is nothing around. Also I have heard that they are colour blind so this whole colour scheme with the jigs apparently doesn't make a difference, is it just me or has anyone else out there heard of this or been told that and could cold weather and choppy water affect the way I catch my calamari? Thanks, Zac

Justin80
I'm not sure if squid are colour blind, but I'm almost certain they can see ultraviolet light. If you look at your squid jigs or most other lures and jigs in fact, under an ultraviolet light they appear the be extremely bright. Their colour under ultraviolet doesn't seem to correspond to the colour they appear to us in normal sunlight. They tend to glow a very bright white, blue or green. The big Japanese branded squid jigs have panels that positively blaze under ultraviolet.
jshields
I find early morning, late arvo going dark with clear water to be the best time. I have never had much luck when its windy or strong current. Natural colours and yakka (look alike) jigs is all i use along with Egimax spray and catch plenty in the right conditions.Have never used bright colours, pinks etc. Also, where i squid which opens out to the ocean, if the water is stirred up and not clear after big seas i dont waste my time. Squid only have a short life span, spawn in warmer months and grow quick. There are plenty of big buggers around at the moment. Cheers

zaki10
Hi Zac, i chase squid at Terrigal around the haven and the rocks. Not good conditions at the moment. Cheers John Cheers John. It's a shame the beginning of winter produced some good results for me and now it's kind of died out, this rain isn't helping much either because the water is too fresh. Anyways when all the commotion has gone I will give it another shot.
