Yaulpang
Hey Tom, Welcome to the site. Keeping it simple works for me. You should use what your using for bait in your berley. Berley has a filler and the bait. For filler I use breadcrumbs mixed with seawater till it gets like thick porridge or stale bread soaked. For bait stuff old pilchards, tinned catfood and fish frames are good ingredients. Finally if your specifically targeting bream then use breadcrumbs with yellow split peas. COver the yellow split peas with boiling water and let it soak. Do this at home and when you get to your fishing spot add the breadcrumbs and mix till thick like porridge. Happy fishing, Paul
Ken A
Boiled wheat is great bream berley also. Cover wheat with boiling water & leave it for a few hours till it gets absorbed by the wheat & off you go. A mash of pillies mulched up in bread is very effective. Never discount just plain old white bread either. It attracts everything I reckon. The next time I see rat Kings slurping bread like big mullet won't be the first Ditto what Yaulpang said about whatever you are using for bait. Fishinmishin
A splash of tuna oil for extra scent and a bit of sand to help sink to the ideas above and your away. I find the good old chicken pellets are a sure winner . Cheers, Jay
Guest madsmc
I've done a bit of experimenting with different berley mixes, but the one I find most effective is a mixture of stale bread, a few handfuls of chook pellets and a generous splash of tuna oil. I mix this in a 2 litre ice cream container, then when I get to my spot I add saltwater. Put the lid on the container and shake it up so the bread starts to break down. I usually wait a bit to let the bread fully break down otherwise you'll find that its floats, then you'll have the gulls all over the place. Mine mine mine mine! Sometimes I'll try a few different additions, like fish frames or a can of el cheapo cat food. It's always brought results for me, or even the other people who mysteriously move closer when they see your berlying an area. madsmc
kevvie
I believe that sometimes it's not so much the concoction you create but how you deliver it that makes all the difference. If you are fishing in heavy current frozen berley mixes are a good way to get the berley down deep and slowly break up to create a trail. I use PVC pipe open ended and freeze the berley mix in ready to use portionsin the pipe. To deploy the mix you can lower it to the bottom by rope or in an onion sack etc. By using a pipe the berley mix doesn't defrost too quickly. In slow current throwing the berley in a straight line out the back of a boat works more effective than spraying it around the boat for more coverage. It's a simple matter of casting an unweighted bait in that straight line of berley to catch fish. Hope that helps a little... It helped me.
