Quick Calamari Jig

Recommended Posts

Went for a quick jig just outside Bate Bay as I haven't been fishing for a while. Got a decent catch in about an hr or two, though no big ones like I use to get. Tried for some winter flatties but every cast my gear turned into Houdini and went disappear from those awesome Jackets that I hope stay around for ever.

600ml Drink Bottle for size comparison.

Good work mate. I've struggled on the squid this winter. Were you fishing from a boat?

Yeah mate it was from a small tinnie (4m). Dark coloured jigs (brown/green) worked well whilst the coloured jigs struggled hard. Early morning from about 6-9am normally works best as they seem to really die off as the sun comes out. There were plenty out as we were seeing 2-3 other squid coming up with our catch.

Nice catch! Where did you go for them?

Bate Bay just outside the Port Hacking, there is plenty of little reefs and weedy areas that always clean up just make sure there is weed.

Garry you still need to show me some spots in Botany Bay as I heard there is more to fishing than just squidding. :D

You been trying off Wallies Wharf, Bundeena Wharf or South Cronulla Point?

I use 20-40pound leader to get myself out of snags as I found the squid unlike fish are not scared of by the leader size. From shore at night I use a 1-1.5g jig with a small glow stick attached to the leader about a metre or so away. When it gets real hard I dip the jig in tuna oil

Hey Vandal, I tried to search Bate Bay on maps but I didn't find much. Could you possibly give me driving instructions via inbox on how I would get there such as street names etc?

Thanks

Zac
