Tiller Steer boats

Does anyone know if there is any product that can hold a tiller steer in a particular position? If i let go it pulls to one side straight away. I've been on other boats with tiller steers where they are a bit more stiff and don't swing around so easily.

The main reason i want something like this is for when i am fishing on my own, if i want to use the down rigger its near impossible because as soon as i stand up the boat slowly spins around which i can see will cause all sorts of dramas one day.

Hope this all makes sense...

Hey m8,

i had the same prob when I had my tinny. I found myself a long piece of elastic (or a couple ocky straps tied together). Went from one side of the boat to the other with one wrap around the tiller handle. Leave enough stretch either way incase you have to make a quick course correction.

Worked well and cost less than 5 bucks..

Cheers,

Chris.

All outboards do pull one way due to the rotation of the prop. Even boats with steering wheels do pull one way. The hydraulic steering stops the motor pulling one way but the older mechanical type does not stop the motor wanting to turn one way.

In saying this on your motor, on the underside of the cavitation plate you have a little fin called a trim tab ( i think ). The trim tab is adjusted and used to counteract the rotation of the prop. You can loosen it off adjust it around the way you are always correcting the motor to or the opposite way to which it always turns to. This should help it stay straight. It might take a few goes and tests to get it right.

But i would be careful letting go of the tiler steer and definitely would not let it go if you are doing any sort of speed. Might be ok at trolling speed.

Would this be right Huey ?
