herdsman
why not fit both VHF & AM/FM ? Hi Brett, the reason being i only have 1 hole cut out in the console, and did,nt really want to cut out another one, and i know you can fix them on top of the console, thats why i asked the question about handheld VHF's. oz_brett
Surely there's a Yak fisho out there that can give the info you need. Ive never used the hand held I have the mounted VHF unit with 2.5m antenna wich is also connected to the radio the VHF is still perfectly clear talkting to marine rescue Sydney from Browns mountain. 27mhz seems to be very unclear & pics up electrical interference. the only thing that would concern me with a hand held is it going to be there when you need it & will it have charge in the batteries. I will watch this post if you dont get any other feed back I will try asking some of the marine rescue guys when I talk to them over the weekend. Testlab
The repeaters on CHs 21, 22, 81, 82 have made the use of handheld VHF more feasible. However the coverage on CH16 (distress) is not via a repeater and will always rely on having the best possible transmission and reception, which means the best antenna possible and the higher output power of a fixed mount unit. The practical usability of a handheld will depend on where you're going.
cheap charlie
A couple of points of interest. If you do go down the Hand Held route get a unit that is switchable between 5W and 1W. Also depending upon how far out you go it may be advantageous to buy a unit that accepts a External Aerial. That way you can interface with a decent aerial should you require more range then the hand held can give you alone. Another point of consideration may be a unit that you can charge in the boat on extended trips or you have an auxiliary battery for the unit.
