Paikea
Does anyone still go shark fishing? Used to see a lot of boats taking tons of burley out wide and catching humungous Tigers, Makos etc that were hung on gantries and written up in the papers. Been there & done that but wonder if the culture has gradually changed to the point where apart for chasing Gummies to eat anglers are concentrating on fin fish and leaving the sharks alone. Any feedback on this? Cheers Paikea
finin
Yes to your question lol. Paikea you seem to be gunning your question towards tournament fishing? If so...the days of bringing a big noah back to the gantry are basically dwindling away. Long gone are the bob and dolly dyer days. If you want to see some amazing shark fishing days off Sydney, go down to SGFC and have a look. I still remember seeing sharks pulled up on North Bondi. T&R is by far taking over but many comps still have categories for capture., namely obviously biggest shark. I personally dont have a problem with seeing big things being weighed in as long as there is a benefit to it eg pending record or winning a comp.Anyway everybody would know the weight of the biggest caught and none generally take for killings sake On a rec front, gummies aren't as plentiful as vic. Makos are the main sport off Sydney. I find shark fishing a challenge as you dont know whats going to pop up. Commercially wobbys, bull sharks and a few others are taken, but must be of certain length. As for the shark meshers we have to release anything alive which is fun, take samples of any dead sharks for fisheries and take any dead whites directly to fisheries whole. Catchin Jack
Be good to see some photos of what you do Finin. We're planning a Lake Mac bull shark fish soon, there's been some big ones sighted and also a great white in the channel near the drop off. Paikea
The reason that I asked is that I have a number of shark rigs (hooks & plastic covered wire trace) that I have no further use for. Sizes vary from big to medium, most in good condition and never used in anger. Any Raider interested is welcome to have them, just let me know and we can arrange to hand them over at some mutually convenient coffee shop.
