Guest bluecod
What a cracker of a morning - no frost today, but an early westerly to keep the chill on things. The Cap'n and myself put in at Tunks Park at a leisurely 6.45am and went straight out through the heads and turned left heading up to the Bower to try and crack a Sambo or Kingy - we never got there! Coming around North Head we were greeted by the sight of a sportsfisher surrounded by a flock of gulls - looks like mossies on the photo but were in reality, gulls. Spin gear comes out and we thrash the water for one hook-up and an immediate knot undoing [i still have to remind myself to wear reading glasses to tie knots]. A few other boats joined us so the school sounded and dispersed a bit with a number of smaller schools breaking up here and there The action on metal slugs and Sp's was pretty slow, so as the wind had dropped off the fly gear came out and an epoxy "eye" got tied on as bait. Bingo! first cast at the next bust-up and I'm on, with the fish stripping off all my fly line down to the backing and then a bit more. The 10 weight handled the fish with ease and he was dehooked and released as it was still pretty early in the day. For some reason not all the photos taken were saved on the camera, so I'll have to get that looked into. At the next bust-up I got another hook-up on the second cast with the fish still shying off metal slugs and pulled this 54cm model out of the pond. The Cap'n wised up and although he only had spin gear, he put on a sinker and a 60cm trace and tied on an "eye", which shortly became a solid hook-up and lengthy tussle on a similar fish. I got another on the fly, however by about 10.00 the fish were getting spooked by the boats and it became very difficult to approach them. This last photo is of a school just inside North head. Guest Jocool
i wonder if the sambos know they were a week late??? 62082[/snapback] Or even a DAY LATE! Why couldn't they show up yesterday for me and Mark? Great to see they are around George. Can't wait to get out there now!

When that fly line comes up tight and the fish starts to take line, is a great feeling especially on home tied flies. It was a great way to bust the fly/sambo virginity - now I can't wait to go one class of rod/line lighter to have even more fun on them. BTW the #9/10 performed beautifully on them particularly the last fish that wanted to slug it out down deep

Narralakes
Could it be the start of the salmon, they have only been patchy at best, here's hoping they will be here in more numbers. You sure know how to torture someone George, I cant wait till I can be present for a couple of hours of salmon bust up and charging line down to the backing session...or two. Were you using the sinking line on them? well done on the home rolled flies as well.

They were feeding on whitebait that were no more than 15mm long and about as thick as a match. Yep, whilst there are reports of sambos all along the coast, I think they could be just starting up here in Sydney, if the weather holds next Saturday could be the go. Lurespinner, the flies were like the top one in this photo but with a tail not past the end of the #2 hook
