MV Sunray
This might be a silly question but have you set the squelch?
locodave
That just reduces static doesnt it? I bought the boat with thisnradio so have no idea.
MV Sunray
I'm not familiar with your particular model but your basic VHF has three dials. Volume, channel, and squelch. Sometimes volume and squelch dial are combined. Find the squelch dial and turn it anti clockwise with the set on and volume up you should hear static. Slowly turn the squelch dial clockwise until the static is eliminated. Your VHF is now set ready to use/listen/transmit.
locodave
I did do that at one stage but didnt hear anything. I will leave it on and see if i pick up anything. I guess i shouldnt be expecting to hear a talkback radio show but still expected to hear something. Should i leave it on 1W or 25W?
oz_brett
1W 25 goes over every one else and base stations like marine rescue & police will probably get upset with you
MV Sunray
Agree with oz Brett. How did you go with it?
locodave
Havent heard a thing come out of it yet. I purchased a new aerial mount coz that was broken. Radio is wired properly. Maybe the aerial is broken. This guy didnt look after his boat well at all.
Testlab
Pull the radio out of the mount and check the aerial cable is attached properly. Then follow the cable back to the aerial making sure it isn't kinked, cut or damaged. Next remove the antenna from its base and check the cable goes in to the whip part properly and isn't broken or damaged.
locodave
I have done all the above actually. The only thing I can think of is the whippy aerial is damaged too or I just don't know how to use the radio. I will check it out with Huey!
