Paikea
My son in law has been trying to catch some mud crabs in the river at Ballina but no success to date. He leaves his traps in the water whilst he goes fishing then lifts them when it is time to go home. Someone just told him to leave the traps overnight. wouldn't that be risky in term of theft? Or is there a way to guard against that? Also, what should he look for when placing his traps, close to shore, deep water, near mangroves? And finally is there a fool proof bait that he should use to improve his chances? Thanks for any advice. Cheers Paikea
Flickn Mad
There are pros up there that will check your traps for you at night (thoughtfull guys) they may even take your traps home with them for safe keeping. As for baits we have done well with fresh catfish and mullet. As for spots, drop offs near mangroves and creek entrances have served us well in the past. We have generally trapped up river a bit where the water is a bit coloured.
Paikea
Thanks Flickn. kind of the pros to be so thoughtful. Didn't know about coloured water but that makes sense. Cheers Paikea Edited December 24, 2013 by Paikea
