yting
Hi guys, went out last night in pursuit of that elusive Jewie. No luck again with the Jew but managed a fairly large Salmon. Conditions were ok and my plan to catch a Tailor for bait worked perfectly. I used the Tailor head with guts hanging out and launched it into a nice gutter. I was convinced something would take it and run even if the Jew weren't around. I'm starting to realise that even if I have spent many long hours off the beach for no Jew, it means nothing and I am no closer to that first capture. I guess the Jew don't know how much time I have invested so each time I go I'm treating it as if it is my first outing. That way there is less disappointment when I return Jewless. The Salmon was caught on a pillie and is in the fridge for dinner tonight. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to cook it? Preferably on the BBQ. Thanks - sorry no Jew report
GaryO
What beach Nat ? Without sounding condescending are you good at reading a beach and finding the gutters and channels etc, as this has a major bearing on whether you will catch Jew. Also the tailor you catch arent overly big use the whole fish live as bait or else have a crack at catching beach worms as they are a killer bait for jew but u will need a few. If you are into smoked fish that is one way people do salmon , but im sure others will have plenty of options. Keep trying and the illusive mulloway will happen. Good luck

Good luck Never thought of smoking Salmon. Are they any good? Up to now any Salmon that I have kept have been used to make fishcakes, they are very good for that providing you use about two thirds potato and bread crumbs to one third of Salmon flesh. Good luck Thanks for you reply Gary, it was Wanda beach. I do my best to spot an appropriate gutter but due to my lack of success, you're probably right in that I'm obviously not picking the right ones. Having said that, over many outings I have studied the beach closely and tried most types of gutters - parallel, adjacent etc. The Tailor was too big to use whole. The head and guts weighed a lot by its self and was hard enough to get a good cast out to the gutter. I think live beach worms are about the only bait I haven't tried. This may be the answer. Tulz
I've only ever kept salmon for bait. Every so often i'll turn them into fish cakes but only after being heavily seasoned. Don't be afraid to through a whole Tailor out, even if you think it's too big. You'd be surprised what they'll fit in their mouth!
leonardgid
catch . bleed , gill, wash and slurry your salmon , if you dont do this to them before you fillet it dont expect it to taste any good, once you remove from the slurry fillet and skin the fillets then remove the bones and the bloodline , wash the fillets in cold water , then dry and sprinkle on them a little sea salt ,wait for 1 hour then cook any way you like , I f you go to the trouble then you will be eating allot of salmon from now on ! Nats - Love your technique for avoiding disappointment - sounds funny but staying positive when fishing can sometimes make the difference. Good luck with your Jew quest Cheers Blood Knot
