Need help catching a grouper

The tackle you should use for grouper is a 12ft 9 wrap fast taper rod matched to a 700E series alvey.loaded with 15Kg Minimum line.

Make sure you prepare well for the outing - maybe a month of doing 100 squats per day as you will need strong knees...

Best of luck!

Chris.

The Eastern Blue Groper (which is blue as a male or red as a female) can change sex from female to male if the male is removed.

The ideal bait for this species, not to be confused with Grouper (a QLD fish) is the Red Bait Crab - see picture below

The tackle needs to be robust at least 50lb, mono or braid but preferably mono from the rocks and a very strong rod. A small ball sinker running directly to a 4 x strong 5/0 to 8/0 hook with said crab in segments or whole.

A paternoster rig can be used in very reefy areas.

When a large groper grabs your crab HOLD ON TIGHT :)

Dont put the rod in a holder. You may wait a while but when they hit they hit hard and the fight will be over in seconds if you are under strength with your gear too. I use unweighted large banana prawns and crabs and add a small sinker if required to hold bottom
