Soft Plastics help

Hello fellow raiders,

I was hoping someone can offer me some of their advice when it comes to SP fishing. I have only just started getting into it and over the XMAS break investing some cash in buying myself a Shimano rod and reel, power pro braid and some flurocarbon leader.

I do not own a boat so most of my flicking will be shore based. The part I am struggling with the most is what size jigheads to use, to allow me a long enough cast into some deeper water, but not to heavy that it will affect the action of the plastic. I bought a packet of size 6 and 9 Squidgy jigheads along with Squidgy Wriggler 100ml in bloodworm.

Was looking at buying the Berkley Gulp in 3" minnow and/or jerk shad in nuclear chicken and pumpkinseed?

Am i on the right track? Do I need to down or up the weight of my jighead? Is the minnow better than the jerkshad? to both have success?

I understand everyone has their favourites and opinions will vary, not after anyones secret tips or locations or anythign like that, am just looking at getting started so any friendly advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance. :)

KK

Sounds like you are on the right track Kosta already The rod is a pretty important part of the rig and the lightest purpose built soft plastics ones are the best as that was the 1st mistake i made all those years back when i started out ,my rods are only around the $80 mark and the reels only $60 so you don't have to go crazy with the price, the jig head i find is all dependant on the conditions and the depth you are fishing.I mostly fish around the 3-4mtr mark and always have the wind at my back and fish a 1/8" jig head 4"gulp worm in pumpkinseed or watermelon . 6lb braid and 2 mtr flourocarbon leader If the winds are light i may have to step up to the next size jig head to get the distance. If you check out my youtube videos you will see the main action i use is just a slow lift of the rod , you can mix it up and it isn't an exact science trust me as i saw a 13yr girl at Forster flicking plastics into the lake system with a llightening fast heave of her rod hooking up to a 50cm flatty .But the main thing is making sure you hit the bottom watch your line goes slack and then start your gentle flick up wards.I'm sure you will get results with and bloodworm wrigglers as they are good and i reckon anything with a good tail action like the GULP worms have are the best type .Good luck mate :sun:

Hi guys. Thanks very much for the info. Also I did have a read of heaps of posts using the search function prior to my post and the advice varied massively as expected. I just wanted to know if I was on the right track with my particulr setup more so than anything, which by all accounts I am on the right track with room to experiment.

Thanks again both of you for your replys. Much appreciated.

P.s - will check out the youtube clip flickinlures. :)
