Botany Bay 13 / 14th Trevally madness.

Haven't done any boat fishing in months,

Went to the bay Monday and Tuesday arvo with the new boat. Hit the Kurnell side of fishing due to being some wind on both days. I was surprised to see the amount of slimy mackerel in the bay, a school of them was around the boat and they were as much pest as the large yellowtails bait around.

Within the school of mackerel there must of been massive school of trevally as on both days pulled out as much as 60 between the four of us. kept only a few 40cm + for a feed, the rest went back in. plus 1 x 40cm snapper by catch.

Just before sunset, I gave my 4 year old daughter the rod which I'm sure had a trevally on it, about half way up it the rod buckled further and I took the rod as it got a heavy load on it. As soon as I look in the water I see the biggest flathead hooked and it would of definitely been a PB I am assuming it would of been around 90cm+, As soon as the flathead came to the surface it raced off peeling a lot of line. was fighting it for a while and then suddenly my line goes heavy and no more headshakes. Bringing up the line I had some dead weight I find a trevally on the hook and no flathead, upon inspection the trevally was dead. This flathead grabbed the trevally on the way up and it was 30cm. Amazing to see a flathead attack such a large bait and swallow it whole.

Enough of trevally my next targets will be the kingfish with the water on both days being 24.7 degrees, looks like will be a top year so far.

My better half had similar experience at Narooma 23 years ago. Caught a 30cm Reddie and it was smashed by a 4.7 kg flatty. Landed both with the flatty returned. The rediie was scaled and dead and the flatty spat it out in the net. Not even hooked!!

thats the stories of 2009!

the sun must have warmed up the water, made them all crazy.

mind telling us what depth you were fishing?

that must of made your arms sore.......... :)

Definitely a replay of 2009. I was in 6m depth.

I was surprised as they were not shy at all, I was using light gear, but a friend was using 30lb trace and still catching them. Usually not the case.

Hahahaha

Sounds like a beast of a session, good stuff. I'm hanging to get out and try some new gear myself, can't wait to get out.

Ended up getting a quintrex 560 quinine classic, needed the extra room for the kids.

I will be in the bay more often, See you guys on the water. Nice work on the Dollies.

Nice one buddy! Took the kayaks out with a bunch of mates late yesterday and landed 15 flatties between us. Dropped a few big ones as well. Good to see the bay starting to fire up, hopefully the bigger kings will follow suit.

P.S. Go the quintrex!!! Hehe

Thanks mate, can't wait for the kings, I saw some big archers on the sounder near Molineux Point, didn't have right bait for them and was windy, will be trying next week. Nice work on the flatties. Love the Quintrex :)
