No luck still on the Jew

Went out again off Cronulla beach yesterday afternoon/evening. Thought I would try a different approach and try to catch some beach worms to use for a Jew bait. Dragged my stink bait around for an hour and a half and didn't spot any worms popping up. Luckily however, I did catch some pipis and was hoping to use them to catch something I could use as bait for the Jews. No luck with that either catching anything suitable. Just as I thought all was lost, a very kind bloke turns up next to me and lends me some fresh squid.

I considered this a good sign of things to come as he was a regular to catching Jews and suggested we were in for a good shot. Sadly, things just didn't happen as the script would suggest. The only saving grace was a monster salmon I caught about 1030pm when we were packing up. I reckon it would have been around 3kg.

Oh well back to the drawing board, I think I'm up to plan R now. I'll let you know how that goes.

Nats the Jews off Cronulla and the Hacking are very quite at the moment. Now with the NE wind blowing upwelling occurs bringing the dirty looking cold water current into the bay (yes cronulla is a bay). Off the coast the water is clearer but still cold. This is what I think is causing the slow off Cronulla beach at the moment. Now in the river system the water is clear and warm BUT there are so many people using so many motorised boats in the shallow system scares the Jewies off. Last night, full moon, change of tides, squid everywhere but the boats going up and down the river and if they were moored the lights and noise travel was unbelievable. Better off in a system like the georges river were it is a deeper and larger system (not too many skiers under captain cook bridge haha). This is my theory. Hope this helps.

PS the change of tide was about 10.30pm last night. I think you left too early. Just a thought but a nice fresh slab of salmon thrown out may have produced something. Just a thought.

Plan R! I love it. Im on my third alphabet by now. Hah! Keep at it, sposedly jew fish exist!!! All I would say is dont doubt the crappier baits. I know, and agree that fresh is best, but i have had two really good runs on pillie baits both i beleive to have been jewies. Got busted both times, so no way to know for sure. But i would say leave some pillies out as a fail safe if you cant fing the good stuff.

Cheers and good luck!

Hey Nats,

Mate where were you fishing? The mrs and I went for a swim yesterday and there was a ripper channel running parallel to the beach from north cronulla along the wall and at the northern end of the wall there was a promising looking gutter running out to sea.

Better luck next time mate

Thanks Whitewash, I was a fair bit north of there. Although deciding on the right gutter can be difficult at Cronulla. There are so many to chose from ATM. I got there just after low tide in the afternoon so I could spot the best one (I thought). I was happy with the one I was fishing as it had an entry point and and exit point. Just got to be lucky to chose the correct gutter I guess.
