Catchin Jack
The Berkley Poppers are great, had some really good results with them. http://berkley-fishing.com.au/product/7cm-popper/
fisherman666
I bought some Chinese knock off lures before and was not impressed. The body might be ok but those hooks they use are cheap and nasty. Very easy to bend. So when you go and buy some new 'owner' trebles or what have you then the economy isn't there anymore. Well that's what I found with some fake 20g halco twisties that I bought off ebay.lesson learned.
Scratchie
I'm with catchin jack! Try the berkley range. The trouble with fakes is you don't know what your getting. Some swim ok, some sideways etc! And the hardware is usually crap! Spend the money and get what you pay for! IMO Cheers scratchie!!!
Devil Ray
You should buy whatever gear you can afford, i would just hate to lose a fish of a lifetime by using bad quality gear
sureangler
i have a shallow dive lure from kmart - cost me no more than $5. it swims sideways and even upside down occasionally. I could see the fish laughing at me the first time i used it. Spend your money on something better

Not only that, the trebles are very low quality which means they rust easily and over a short period of time, weaken. sureangler
bugger the 'over time'. first time i got it snagged it took the whole trebble off - it snapped the loop of the lure that had the 'ring' in it
