VViCKiD
Hi guys, I've been struggling to catch kingfish all day today. Been live baitig today and my baits come out with just the head or half the body. I'm using size 8 gamagatsu octopus hooks. I use 2 hooks. One in the mouth and one just at the back of the dorsal fin. Are my hooks too big? Been extremely frustrated all day. But sure beats working !
pete76
Try 5/0-7/0 circles, single hook either thru the top or above the eyes
Devil Ray
I rig one through the nose and one through just in front of the tail.... Kingfish always attack baitfish at the head.... Sounds like u riggin em right just sometimes the fishing gods just arent on your side
tasksta
Size 8 hooks are tiny, i assume you mean 8/0?

Are my hooks too big? Been extremely frustrated all day. But sure beats working ! Sounds like something other than kings were taking your baits. I only use 1 hook on the nose and it hooks up kings fine. My thinking is 2 hooks and extra line is not needed and is less appealing.

Devil Ray
I agree with the one hook through the nose theory if fishing just for Kings but some of my best catches havent been the targeted species hence the reason i pop one down near the tail in case of a Jew or big greenback strike
VViCKiD
Thanks guys. I took a few screenies of my fish finder when it was all happening. Can any one have a guess what it was ? There were bait balls and it seems something was really scaring them

Twinfisher 4.9
Kingfish, unlike Tailor, will take your bait head first and the least hardware the better. A second hook isn't really necessary and may scare away strikes. You may lose your odd yellowtail to Tailor but if its Kings you are after, one 6/0 to 8/0 hooked through the nose if trolling / downrigging or through the shoulder if near the bottom or under a balloon.
