Krispy !
Finished uni early and quickly shot off to a nearby spot for a lure only sesh, i was only using 4lb in order to get some distance on the casts. Got to the spot and started casting a small 3 gram metal and four casts in...BANG the little reel starts buzzing and this fish is sticking to the surface and arcing around 50m away eventually it tires and it was 10m away from the wharf when all of a sudden it begins jumping out of the water, i freaked out as it leaped out of the water 3 times in a row and as it came in closer i found out why, it was being tailed by a MONSTER king i would estimate at least 15kg and between 1-1.3m, he came right up underneath it and then turned away just as it came up to the surface i could swear he eyeballed me as he turned away. The sight of this thing in itself was amazing, it was a very fat healthy fish and it had a very broad dark green back and massive tail, i was intimidated just by the sight of it as it turned away it swam off very slowly almost as if it knew i couldn't catch it. During that moment i almost forgot about the mack tuna flapping around on the wharf, its something i wont forget for a very long time and it has me even more eager to bring a livey rod next week The mack went 44cm, after that had another 20 casts for nothing and left as the rain started pouring down. rockfisherman
Some of those big kings are to smart. And I'd say the reason he/she turned away is because they assosiated the Mack tuna with a human. Just a half assed theory. Harry If it's to good to be true, it usually is...

UnderFisher
Great story. Would have been an awesome sight to see a king like that near the wharf Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
plankton
I think that is a Frigate Mackeral. Although if it had teeth it is a Tuna. Should have sent him back out live... who knows what might have happened!

Should have sent him back out live... who knows what might have happened! You can tell its a mack tuna from the spots near the gills and also from the dorsal fin not shown in the picture. It also had teeth. If I had a solid set up I would have but 4lb line on a 1000 stradic and 1-3 kg rod is no match to that king. Even with a proper set up the odds are in the kings favour
filthmonger
Fished the hacking last year and caught a baby snapper as im reeling it in my rod near breaks in half as a king grabbed it. It let go and as i brought it to the surface 3 1m+ kings followed it. I quickly put a hook through it on my heavy outfit (illegal i know but dont pretend you wouldnt do the same!!!) and dropped it right in front of their faces. They swam around it bumping it with their heads but wouldnt take it. Smart buggers those hoodlums.

Devil Ray
Its always the way..... Always see the big fish when you dont have the gear... Would have got the blood pumping though
RichieR
That raises an interesting question ... if you are reeling in an undersize fish that would be illegal to use as live bait, e.g: an undersize whiting. And something bigger takes a bite of it and kills it - can you then use it as bait legally ?Or are you legally obligated to throw the remains back into the water ? Devil Ray
I am pretty sure it is the same rule as if you catch an undersize fish that dies for whatever reason..... Trauma, foul hook etc.... You must throw back

Nice catch, that's a Frigate tuna, I caught one in the hacking one afternoon there was a whole school of them swarming the place and managed one on a metal as well!
