Spooling Braid

Just curious which method you use.

Do you use mono backing straight on your reel then attach braid until full?

Do you spool with braid straight through?

Do you put something on reel spool first to guard against slippage then either of above or something else?

Cheers.

Some reels are designed these days to allow braid straight onto them but most require a bit of mono to prevent slippage. You to not need a hell of alot, just enough to grab hold and not spin under the pressure of a good fish (which I have unfortunately done before). A dozen or so winds of the handle should be ample on spin reels. It all depends also on how long the braid is from the packet and the size of your reel. You may need a bit more underneath if you only have 100 or 150m worth of braid on the purchased spool.

Mono backing would be the way to go for most of us. We probably still have heaps of mono in good condition from the previous purchases, so may as well use it. I'd also venture that most of us would have bought the 125 meter spools of braid, at least the first time around. Just be sure to match the breaking strain of the braid and use a good knot to join the two (uneven diameter) lines.

If spooling all the way with braid, on the other hand, a wrap or two of electrician's tape on the hub of the spool is usually enough to secure the braid so that it won't slip.
