billsmith747
Hi all, I couldn't see any other forum comments on this issue - so here goes I just received my boat licence renewal from the merry bunch at "Transport - Roads and Maritime Services" (NSW) UNBELIEVABLE --- they want $575 for a 5 year renewal (boat + pwc) They advise $40.65 of this goes to Marine Rescue NSW - so that is $534.35 for a 5 year licence!!!!!!!!!!! Compare that to $166 for car licence (and I get a motrcycle licence included in that), it is nothing but an absolute price gouging ripoff. And too make to comparison even worse, you can get a 50% discount on the car licence if you haven't been a bad boy and had any points in the last 5 years - that is $83 (car+bike) compared to $535 (boat+pwc) How can anyone justify this? I want to complain! Anyone got any ideas on how to organise a bunch of us getting enough traction to make someone take any notice in Macquarie St? Linc
I agree, boat license fees in NSW are a rip, nearly double that of Victoria, and not to mention when I recently converted my Vic license to NSW, I wasn’t able to simply convert the remaining 4 years validity of my Vic license to NSW, I had to sacrifice my Vic license and pay for a whole new NSW license with no refund on the Vic license. With car license I was able to convert the remaining years of my Vic license over to NSW at no cost. And we don’t even get a picture on our license here! At least in Vic it was the same as a car license so you could use it as ID the same as a car license too, I could loan my NSW boat license to anyone who wanted to go boating for the weekend and pretend they are me. Berleyguts
I guess I never thought about as I don't have a PWC licence and aren't interested in one. $52 for a car licence and $166 for 5 years. $56 for my boat licence (including $8.13 Marine Rescue contribution) and $266 for 5 years (incl. $40.65 MR cont'n.). A little bit more expensive over the 5 years but, then, car rego and insurance is expensive in comparison to boats. I agree, our pic should be on the licence. billsmith747
And to think we had to put up with BOF's bleating about combining Maritime and RTA for better "efficiencies" We certainly haven't seen any of it. 1 hour wait in a motor registry looking for someone who knows what they "used to do down the road at Maritime office" only to find that person is at lunch - it is a joke ....... and they want me to pay $500+
The Incredible Hull
I think we need a "fishing rant" forum topic menu ! Totally agree, that's an absurd amount.
Guest Aussie007
i hold a PWC license too the fee is a killer, u know u can downgrade your PWC license to a boat license free of charge and u can do one more upgrade back to a PWC license within 5 years without doing the test again, might save u some moolah if u dont go jetsking
Guest no one
I paid $138 for 3 years without PWC...I think PWC is where your money is going!

Juggs
Gotta love Barry O'Fail. the fees were going up way before the liberals came in ask why pwc fees are so high as the boat fee is reasonable I have my views but probably unplatable to those that own them

rockfisherman
I don't know why I keep renewing the PWC part of my licence. I guess I'll want to buy a jet ski the year I don't renew it... Harry Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
John.N
Rumor has it that in NSW the plan is to have boat licences linked in with car / motor bike as 1 licence. Only problem I see is if you loose your car licence for one reason or another you loose the lot! OUCH
batfishing
Totally agree with that comment. There's a reason for everything and you're on the money with your views Juggs! Yep, every time I'm out I just shake my head at 80% of the jetskiers. Unfortunately Pareto's law is fully at work....20% of the jetskiers have f******** it for the other 80% Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

We had 6 of them flying at us while anchored in Botany Bay a few weeks back, looked like they were gonna plough right into us till the last second when they split up and went either side of us, good thing we pulled out lines in in time, they were literally close enough to be coat hangered by our rods... a tempting thought at the time too lol
billsmith747
@Juggs Yes, this was all started by Bob (the banner) Carr. After banishing them from Sydney Harbour he then set in train the exhorbinate fee structure that has been perpetuated by political parties of both sides BOF was the one who joined the RTA and Waterways (sorry Maritime) on the grounds of "efficiencies" to give us the current RMS. Just seems we haven't seen any of these efficiences, haven't seen any increase in service levels AND haven't seen any fee reductions to reflect any of the supposed "savings" @ Juggs Yes you are right, it is the pwc part of the licence that is expensive! Whether you like pwc's or not isn't the point. The issues here are: 1) How can anyone justify the increase in the licence fee for answering an additional 15 questions. That is all you need to do get one (over and above the general licence requirements) 2) The boat and pwc are linked. Just like my motorcycle and car licence are (and I actually had to do an extra separate road test) There is no additional fee for my motorcycle licence so I shouldn't have to pay ANY additional fee for my combined boat/pwc licence @Catchin Juck and fishingphase Be careful what you wish for. This will just introduce MORE regulation - just what we need (not) It is already been mooted to link car licence points to boat licences (and I assume vice-versa) The Incredible Hull has already noted a "suggestion" in another forum discussion on this site "Read this:http://www.maritime....rray_review.pdfIts a 2011 safety review on possible new compliance etc for water\boating safety.Pay attention to "Discussion paper options supported by submission" #27 - keyword is "should" as it is a suggestion." So, as sure as night follows day (or is it day follows night?) - it is coming And watch your parking fines for cars - if you don't pay one of them - you will lose your boat licence and boat registration too Only drama I see is that if and when RMS understand I'm not being charged extra for my bike licence, they will bring it in line with boating licences As I said, be careful what you wish for. I better shutup!
