ALVEYS

Hi to all,

Im chasing some opinions on alveys. I fish the beach with a 6000 reel loaded with 300m of 30lb braid paires to a 13ft 10-15kg areowave rod. There is also a kmart combo, but this is what i wish to replace.

I hear alveys are great, but they are a world away from what i have gotten use to. I am a dedicatted braid fisherman. Hence i am wondering lots of things;

-At what price do alvey combos start (lower end prices for first purchase)?

-How much line do they hold?

-What lb line do they generally hold?

-What rating do the rods come in (I like to cast whole pillies and 80g sinkers ie. 100g cast weigth, so i prefer stiffer rods)

-Do they have a drag system?

-Is that drag variable (in the hand vs in a sand peg)?

-What does the mono do if the line goes slack in a holder, does it unravel?

-Is the casting TRUELY better than a 6000 reel with braid?

These might all seem like pretty basic questions, which they are I guess. Im just feeling lazy today and happy to get advice from all you keen fisherman.

Cheers guys

Under $250 will set you up

emuhysa3.jpgydugu2ah.jpg

And platypus Lo stretch line in 500m, I like the light pink colour best

-suggested rod rated at 12kg not sure what cast weight is

-depending on the size of the reel of course but the 600bc holds 500m of 7kg if you want more capacity you can step up to the 650 size

-they come with and with out drag, the one I suggested has drag

-yes drag is variable via lever in picture

-no line dosnt unravel

-when set up right alveys cast great, otherwise they wouldn't ve won a whole bunch of casting competitions

You'll never know until you get one and try one for yourself.

-At what price do alvey combos start (lower end prices for first purchase)? You can pick up a good middle of the road rod for $150 Anything from the Wilson range

-How much line do they hold? Depends what model you buy

-What lb line do they generally hold? Again depends on which one you buy as they come in different sizes

-What rating do the rods come in (I like to cast whole pillies and 80g sinkers ie. 100g cast weigth, so i prefer stiffer rods) For throwing light weights like that finding a suitable rod shouldn't be a problem. Its basically the same as a spinning rod with a different butt and guide setup but made from the same blanks

-Do they have a drag system? Yes

-Is that drag variable (in the hand vs in a sand peg)? Adjustable just like any other drag

-What does the mono do if the line goes slack in a holder, does it unravel? Not usually

-Is the casting TRUELY better than a 6000 reel with braid? Not unless your really good. I use a 5500 reel and get 150g to 200g around 100m. Can't see much point in going further. If I need to go out along way i get out the overhead gear

These might all seem like pretty basic questions, which they are I guess. Im just feeling lazy today and happy to get advice from all you keen fisherman.

If your looking to gain yardage on your casting it could be more a matter of technique. Which Aerowave are you using Glass, Composite or Carbon Fibre

Cheers, Ive had a good look at the alvey websit whilst sitting here.

I was having a look and saw the 6500BCV. What are your thought in comparison to the 600BCXL suggested above. If I buy the reel then search for a rod that fits it, probably the best wat to go. Are the Alvey rods worth it or am I best to look elsewhere. I notice the reel sits quite far down the rod, I assume it still sits in a PVC holder all the same? I was also having a peep at the 650GTS telescopic. Seems useful, but whethe or not it is I have no idea. Actually telescopic plus sand is probably a horrible idea....

Alvey rods are excellent value for money, they have a cheaper base model with blue and red bindings, then there's the step up with green and yellow bindings, I have both and both serve me very well, beats spending over $200 on a wilson because they're actually a really good rod

You did notice that they sit quite low, and yes a rod should be a low mount to suit alvey reels, but another key design of alvey specific rods is the position of the first runner is further up than a regular spin reel.

Yes they sit perfectly in a PVC pipe at the beach and I can't vouch for the telescopic on the sand, but I do own one in the event I need it for travel.

If and when you decide to get an alvey reel, watch the DVD that comes with the reel. It will tell you everything you need to know
