NaClH2OK9
I hadn't planned for an early start today perhaps an 8am. But one thing lead to another and then my 12 year old daughter decided that comming with me fishing ( not usually her type of thing) was preferable to tidying her room! Not about to argue with the chance to encourage her on the water. I patiently waited whilst she spent well over an hour getting ready ( got changed twice. Chose a book. Chose a swimming costume. .......) Anyway we got to gunamatta for a late 10:30 am to find all the trailer spots full. ( its not a lot of consolation seeing parking tickets on the cars in trailer spots) when it takes you 30 mins to find a street spot and walk back to the ramp. Anyway. We headed for the South West arm thinking it would be quiet and we may get some live bait ( and a beautiful view for a couple of hours) I rigged a live bit rig. Handed to my daughter started lots of burley and threw out a lure just in case. 2nd cast and 3 king fish of about 50 cm followed the lure all the way to the boat before departing. I tried lure after lure and retrieve after retrieve but the fish were not seen again. We baited jigged and baited again and again but couldn't catch any bait fish. Switched to a small We could see the damn things everywhere but using bread. Tiny bits of squid or white bait. These bugger were expert an scoffing the bait around even the smallest hooks!!!! We stuck it out till 1:30 and decided a Change of scene was required. We took a slow trip south side to jibbons. Threw out a float. A whole squid on a pennel and a 2 hook paternoster. Not a single knock Bait was frequently being stripped but nothing. This went on for an hour and then. Wallop. My rod bent double and line stripped off it like I was game fishing. I checked the drag and decided to leave alone. It hadn't gone ping yet and I didn't want anymore bend in the rod ( fishing 15lb floro on 30lb pe braid. 8000 stella) after a short while the fish seemed to stop and I slowly gained back 40 of the 50 meters of line ( up untill now hardly a head shake) I'm looking for colour everywhere when the fish decides it wants to be somewhere else again. Another 50 meters of line before it stops. Over the next few minutes I get some line back but rather than tiring it's waking up. taking a bit of line with every shake. Again I must have the fish within a few meters of the boat when it takes off at at twice it's previous pace. This time horizontally. It runs for about 60 meters. I'm watching the spool to make sure I'm safe when this thing decides it going to leave the water. I look up just to see a splash as it's thrashing around on the surface. But all I can see is white water. It's going nuts and then it's all over I reel in to find its snapped the rig. I have no idea what it was. Possibly a big king? ( but I've previously found these go frantic as soon as hooked). I do know it's the biggest thing I've had on my line in the 3.5 years I've been fishing here. Gutted. I Re. Rigged with heavier floro but nothing else happen with that rod. The only fish caught was a 15-20cm puffer on the livey rig I dropped in the last 10 mins. Handed to my daughter who brought it in and is now telling me she caught more fish than me. Talk about insult to injury! We called it quits and headed over to mainbar for a swim before hitting the ramps (and another 30 min round trip to get the car and trailer from a few streets away) Next time?! Krispy !
thrashing around on the surface and the speed of it makes me think it might have been a small marlin, its not characteristic of a kingfish thats for sure
Jamie_S
A mate of mine hooked a marlin not far from you today, lost it at the boat, estimated 60kg so it's definitely possible

Talks 2 Fish
By the description of the fight, the blistering runs and in between being worked with relative ease to the boat, it sounds somewhat like a spanish mackerel. I've heard of a few being caught down this far this season and they commonly take to the air, though not sure of the squid bait. Though is probably more likely to be a large salmon or decent kingfish with a shark on its tail.
GreyNurse
Steve, What you described was what pretty well happened to me at Wally's Wharf two weeks ago. Something picked up my salted pilly and took off, slowly at fisrst, then picked up speed, stripping all my braid and some backing. The it stopped and sulked on the bottom, while I slowly regained my line over the next 10 minutes. I couldn't get colour on it, getting it to within 20 meters of the wharf before it took off at the rate of knots. In three surges it peeled off all my 30lb braid which I had topshot on 8lb mono. After stripping 20 meters of the mono, this thing lit the afterburners, and........ ping! The mono couldn't handle it. I had no clue whatsoever as to the id of the fish, until it was reported that Spaniards had been seen in Burraneer Bay. Anyway, commiserations to ya. Let's swap stories at the lure casting social. Looking forward to seeing you there.

filthmonger
Spanish Mackerel, they have been catching a few in the past week including a large fish in the channel outside Burraneer. Maybe that'll teach ya for using 15lb leader
NaClH2OK9
The leader was to entice smaller pinkies for the daughter. I also had my off shore rod with 50lb braid 30lb flouro but that was ignored. Just luck of the draw I guess. Nothing makes a fish more desirable than almost being caught.! Mike.
Saw a few small dolphin fish jumping out the front of the hacking sunday morning...by the sounds of the fight, it could be the culprit.
Dfishin
How is the boat going mate? All sorted. Steering better ?
NaClH2OK9
Boat is going like a champ steering made a massive difference and I fitted big rubber trim buttons too as the stock ones were too recessed. Handles lovely now just my experience that needs an extra 1000 hours and I'll be there Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
Dfishin
Sounds good mate. Yeh i just read your update on the other post. Sounds like she is running like a beauty now. Good to hear you got it sorted out so you can now enjoy your time on the water instead of worrying. Yeh most boat hulls out there will perform perfect for there intended use when set up correctly. I would definitly change that lower trim pin position. Good to hear . Dave
Robinsoi
Top exciting post mate Good on you for taking your daughter with you. Love the tidying the room part. Better luck next time and hope you land the beast. Thanks for sharing. Ian
VBCB
That sounds sharky as ! Sharks have no clear pattern in their fights but good ones are going for mad runs, no head shakes, no nasty reefing, just pure power. Eventually you often lose them when your line's rubbing on their skin or if your leader happens to get into their mouth during the fight. Prime time for bronzies right now, squid being the best bait for them I'd say you got sharked my friend ! Can you remember if the first cm of your leader were "milky" and all rubbed? Would be a good indication.
NaClH2OK9
Hi T. C. Ho it was a clean break. Using a 2 hook patonoster 6 inch droppers and just over a foot between them. It snapped between the droppers so this would have been 12 inches from the hook. The first couple of runs were just hard and staying down. It was the last run where it headed for the surface and definitely it having a div on the surface that made my line give. Perhaps I should have backed the drag off when it came up but at 60 odd meters away. I'm still living the what ifs! I've brought gummy and mako in and it felt different to both but every fish is different eh. Oh well. I'll be out again this weekend having another go ......... NaClH2OK9
Well done on the catch but Hmmm. Got to say I'm a little disappointed as I'd put it in the dream section of missed dollies and small marlin I appreciate all the advice I've been given. It can be hard telling a fish from the way it fights ( for me anyway) Back on the water this weekend to try again. ......... SaltWaterDog
