Paikea
Given the heavy rain last weekend the boss and I decided to drive over some of the fire trails at the back of Milton. Beautiful country but wet as. Saw 3 Lyre birds, a big thrill. They are so stupid they run ahead of the car for quite some distance before they finally get off the road. They seem to fly/hop more than straight flying. Drove up to the bottom of Pigeon House Mountain, Parks have really improved the access to it including a big picnic area and toilets etc. Looked very impressive. The top of the Clyde River must hold a fair population of Bass as there are numerous notices spelling out size/bag limits and a detailed description of Bass as a sportfish. Yowie
Years ago, the missus and I drove across the concrete weir at Shallow Crossing, and I saw big bream, garfish and a flattie swimming about. Did not have my fishing gear with me at the time. A couple of years ago, we drove across the same weir, and the surrounding area was covered with weeds. Could not see much, and only caught a couple of undersized bream. I imagine the weir will be a bit flooded after this rain. Have driven across it in water about a foot and a half deep, but it might be flowing a bit fast for a few days yet.
