antonywardle
Hi All I was looking on my boat boat to see what the recommendation for the largest outboard I can put on. I found a plate in the transom well, but it was too hard to read, so I coloured it in with a texter and took a photo. When I zoom in I can read some numbers but not sure what they are. Looks a bit like: 24 143 V 1 7 3 6 8 1 4 0 Anyone know what they might mean? I was thinking that 140 might be horsepower. The boat, according to the rego papers in a 1978 model and lists it as a Brooker. The stickers on the boat say it is an International Caribean Safari, a touch under 5 metres long. The reason for wanting to know the max HP isn't so I can put on a the largest, its to give me an idea about what I can put on if I find a reasonable 2nd hand one. Maybe a V shaped Hull 17.3 feet long and 6 foot 8 wide? thanks
a boat
Hi, post a picture will help. It cold be a Brooker-not many made and they were called V170. If is a runabout it could be a Safari but back in the day Glastron also made a model called V173. The most critical thing from all of this, from an insurance point of view is the max HP is 140HP. Cheers, Huey.

a boat
Not sure if you are asking me again but as I mentioned in the PM, it looks most like a Safari from that photo. Cheers, Huey.
DTROJAN
+1 Caribbean safari. 140 is the maximum horsepower. I have owned one and have 2 friends who have one each. I fish out them regularly. 1 friend has a 90 hp 4 stoke Honda which is a little bit heavy for the boat so it sits a little low in the water but it doesn't affect the ride of he boat and the power is adequate. Has a top speed of 30knts The other has a 90hp etec that is much lighter and is perfect for that hull. Has a top speed of 32knts. I would recommend 90-115hp. antonywardle
Thanks for that. I have a chance at a 120HP Evinrude 1994 looper motor how will that ride do you think? Its about the only engine that I can find that is at a reasonable price. @heuy sorry I forgot i pm'd you the pictures Edited April 7, 2014 by antonywardle
DTROJAN
Hey mate, That should be fine. My mates Honda 90 is 197kg. That looper is probably around 165kg I would say. Just find out the weight of the motor you've got your eye on and if its around my estimate it should be fine.
antonywardle
thanks for that. according to the manual its around 165kilos, or 30 kilos heavier than the engine thats on there which has been broken since i got it. V4 1632 cc platform, 85/88/90/100/115 HP 20 inch shaft, elec. start, trim/tilt -- 301 lbs V4 2000 cc (loop charge) platform, 120/130/140 HP 20 inch shaft, elect. start, trim/tilt -- 365 lbs Edited April 7, 2014 by antonywardle
DTROJAN
165KG should be fine. I think you will be happy with the safari with a 120hp on it. I owned mine for years and sold it to a mate who fished with me regularly. He refused to let such a good boat go to someone else. My other mate had a new quintrex but after going in the safari on a choppy day in botany bay, sold the quintrex and also bought a safari. They are a soft riding hull in the chop and handle it outside very well. One of the best boats I've owned.
