grandad
Left the wharf at 5-00, straight to the middle ground to check out the current and see which way we were drifting. Some fish were showing on the sounder but I only caught Pike, these were used as bait. There was a fair bit of wind and the drift was to the South East. Sunrise saw the return of the Jackets and they followed me for the rest of the day. Headed south stopping twice at two of my usual spots. Picked up one Flathead at each spot. At each spot I was moved on by Jackets. Further south I saw fish on the sounder, these turned out to be Slimy Mackerel, more bait. Keeping a lure out between spots provided me with the Stripy. Plenty of fresh bait now. Stopping at various places and trying different depths, I just could not get a bait through the Jackets, losing rig after rig before reaching the bottom. In desperation I changed to smaller long shank hooks and caught a few of the little blighters. The wind picked up about 9-00am and I started to head back, the wind started to ease before I reached the Port, but at every place I stopped it was the same story. Pulled the boat out at 12-00, not the catch I wanted but a still a good feed. Not sure what these were in Yowie Bay Some fish showing Sunrise School of Slimy's Final Catch Less all the pink rubbish and bait fish
brunny23
Hi mate, I have the same sounder and the fish on the sounder you are calling a slimy looks a lot like a snapper to me (just my opinion from experience)
NaClH2OK9
Thanks for the writeup grandad. I've been looking at the flat calm water for a few days dreaming of getting back out. You know what they say. Shame the jackets are still a plague but at least you were out. ... Steve
Paikea
Great report Grandad, that is a top sounder that you have. Thank you for sharing, we all love to hear about your exploits in such a detailed way. Cheers Paikea

grandad
Hi mate, I have the same sounder and the fish on the sounder you are calling a slimy looks a lot like a snapper to me (just my opinion from experience) Was a lot larger than a single fish. I thought it was unusual for slimy mackrel to be so close to the bottom but I pulled up three out of the school.

Yowie
At least you caught a couple big enough to eat. The bigger jackets may turn up August/September, and hopefully their numbers will thin out after that.
