TomTom GPS in the boat

So my TomTom is getting on a bit and to buy updated maps
seems to be only marginally less expensive than buying a whole
new unit, so I was thinking of getting a new one which leaves me
a perfect good old one.

So I was wondering about hacking in to it, and putting my own
maps on it and then using it on the boat.

Anyone had a go at doing this?
