dogbox
With a short break in the winds my fishing buddy and I shot down to Jervis Bay (The Banks) for a trying some Tuna launching from Currarong. We headed out to the far east marks on the Banks and trawled east back and forward for a few hours out towards the 150m mark We caught 2 Bonito and one Stripe Tuna 4.35kg On the last turn back towards the banks the over head real scream off, within seconds haft of the line on the real was gone. With line quickly disappearing my buddy turned the boat to take chase and to retrieve some line before we got spooled. After 30 minutes fighting, many runs I was fooled to think that we where on top and going to land this giant. I added more and more drag to the line only ended up with the worst possible out come. LINK BREAK. Absolutely shattering experience!!!! Day 2 the wind was westerly and we trawled along the cliff face with no result We elected to bottom bash for a few hours catching a few undersize kings and snapper. Keepers 3 Morwong and 1 pig fish Enjoyable few days and look forward to the next trip to JB Video uploaded later Dogbox Edited July 18, 2014 by dogbox

LINK BREAK. Absolutely shattering experience!!!! The worst thing you can do is tighten up the drag. If you need more pressure, apply a finger to the spool, so that if the fish takes off, you can relax the finger pressure to reduce the possibility of line breakage, or tackle or knot failure. It may take a little longer to land the fish, but if it is properly hooked, it will usually stay on the line.
marto1976
Great report. How does it take to get out to banks from the ramp. With the westerly blowing did you manage to get away from it along the cliffs. Edited July 18, 2014 by marto1976
dogbox
I have no idea what we hooked, just a look would have satisfied me. Next time ill take the advice and try not to rush the retrieve. SBT I hope so. The ramp at Currarong look great but it suffers from wave and swell movement making it very difficult to retrieve your boat. there is no where to park your boat if your alone. The other alternative is to launch your boat from Greenwell Point. Its about 13km to the western edge of the Banks. Shoalhaven Marine Rescue has GPS marks and distances from Greenwell Point to these fishing marks. There is squid and live bait not far from the ramp. If you launch from Currarong its only 2-3 km to the first mark. The banks is about 5km long with numerous spots along it to explore. On the far east mark of the Banks the current upwells to the surface. The only other place I have seen this type of current movement and upwelling is at Browns Mt. There are some of the biggest drop offs I've ever seen, we came across on section of east side the reef where the reef at its shallowest 20m and quickly drops to 80m Under the cliffs you are not affected by the westerlies, there is plenty of good ground to fish. Just a note; you can get a sense of calm when fishing around cliffs, when we headed back to the ramp and come around the corner of the cliffs we drove head on to a 30km westerly 1m wave chop making it an uncomfortable ride back to the ramp. I recon its one of those spots you should put on your bucket list Dogbox Edited July 18, 2014 by dogbox

Dogbox The swell at the ramp can be an issue & as you say there is no where to park the boat whilst collecting the trailer if by yourself. They spent a lot of money on the ramp which is a big improvement on the beach launch but they failed to provide a place to tie up or even pick up or drop off crew. The other option we use is to fish on a midday tide. If the boat is not too big it's easy to get up the creek & retreive from the ramp next to the caravan park. Assuming there is a crew member , we drop one of the guys off at the small sandy beach al the end of the break wall , he picks up the car & drives it around to the ramp. These photos was taken on a good day & than on a very bad day but shows what can happen when a big N/E blows in the afternoon. Geoff

dogbox
Geoff that photo of a strong NE at the ramp makes for a difficult retrieval, That photo should be added to the boat ramps section Dogbox
richard_pdc
That is not jervis bay that is currarong when the ramp blows up like that the locals take the boats up the creek and launch and the bigger boats go to callala bay if you launch from the bay you are protected from all directions The ramps with in jervis bay are excellent , Great place to go , some great boat ramps and some great fishing The best thing about Jb you can fish it all wind directions
