Hi Raiders,

Late start unfortunately, The missus is overseas so I had to get the kids ready for school.

Launched at about 9am heading to North Head first to check out salmon and then I thought I would scan all the markers for kings.

On my way through I checked the boat moorings under Gladesville Bridge and there were so many arches I had to take a few passes with a fresh down rigged squid.

Here a few pics showing the marks and my down rigger down at the right depth.

There were even more solid marks than these mostly along the outer edge of the boats where it falls off to deeper water.

Jewies I would think but they certainly didn't want any part of my fresh squid.

I have to say that this was not the ideal time or tide but perhaps they were just not on the bite.

Tell me if I am reading the sounder wrong guys but it looks like fish to me!

After half dozen unfruitful runs I headed into the harbour noticing a lot more wind than was predicted.

I can across some salmon at HMAS Sydney but there were too many boats so I was not inclined to bring out the fly rod and I continued heading over to the heads.

The wind was from the south and up around the 20 knot mark. The water temperature was up around 22 degrees

I couldn't find a salmon boil to save my life so I went from marker to marker looking for kings and struck out there too.

Eventually I parked myself at the sticks off Rose Bay and dropped a few squid baits down. The baits were getting picked to pieces so I rigged up a rod with a small running sinker and a smaller hook and I suspected there were more leatherjackets down there that at an Elvis Convention.

I foul hooked a big one and kept it ( I am eating that now) as I reckon they are an excellent quality table fish. I fried it in butter with lemon zest and just a little pepper and salt.

I decided to wait until the turn of the tide. Nothing eventuated.

A few guys turned up , including some tour guides , all asking if I had seen any kings around.

I figure it was a tough day all round.

A little later one of my squid rigs saw some activity but it was just a medium sized octopus.... that is now tenderising in some kiwifruit and I might have that a little later chucked on the BBQ.

I didn't see a lot of baitfish around either on the sounder or in the burley trail.

I have to say that high tides in the middle of the day are not my favourite fishing days.

Give me a high tide an hour or two after sunrise and I am a happy man.

Back at the ramp a guy tells me he had been at Long Reef all day for 12 just under legal kings.

Good luck on the weekend boys and girls!

Cheers

Jim

Hard times recently by the sound of things Jim! You're not the only one though! Things will pick up soon... You're due for a good day.

From the sonar class earlier this year. Those arches look absolutely like big fish. Of course getting them on a hook is the challenge. Great write up Jim.

Yes... I would say big fish for sure.

Here is the first pass before I set up the down rigger.

Nice looking arches on this one.

I have caught some good Jewies at this spot in the past but I fished at night time.

All my fishing books point this out as a Jewie hotspot.
