krause
Ok... so on the weekend i went south chasing kingies. Used live baits, yakkas under a float. I pinned them through the shoulder with a 8/0 circle hook and through the tail with a 2/0 circle hook. And for the first time every i had success with live baiting.... sort of. The kings were around and hit a few livies, however spat the bait after a short run. After inspection, the 8/0 hook was twisted back on and burried in the live bait. So effectively there was no hook point to catch the fish. Any ideas on what was going wrong or was it just bad luck? I tried pinning the big hook through the nose but it kept pulling out during the cast. Maybe briddle rigging? Cheers guys
slinkymalinky
If you're going to use live baits with circle hooks a bridle rig is best. When I was living in Sydney chasing kings I sometimes used a circle in the nose and a J hook stinger in the tail but 2 J hooks works better... circles with live baits always seem to foul. cheers, Slinky
GoingFishing
Hi Mate I find that hook through the nose works best, as naturally they get eaten head first. If your fishing under a float, don't cast too far. Instead open the bail arm for a minute or two and let the bait drift out away from the boat, that should stop the hook from coming out. krause
Cheers guys, ill give the j hooks a go. Pinning through the nose is hard there. Because im off a breakwall, i need a bit of a cast. Its not a massive throw, but its enough to pull the hook... Cheers
Linc
Yeah i 2nd the idea of using j hooks. I like the mustad big red hooks. Usually 5/0 does the trick or 4/0 for smaller yakkas. Unless ur using huge yakkas i think 8/0 is overkill. Others may disagree?
abyss
An 8/0 in line circle hook pinned from underneath the jaw and comming out between the eyes and mouth is the best.

bessell1955
I have never been able to catch and use live bait to any level of success. Perhaps this is a reflection to fishing fresh water most of the time. Keep up the attention to this method of fishing, I am sure you will succeed. krause
Yer. Im much the same. I've only really tried it properly a couple of times. Ive only had baits ripped to pieces or had chunks taken out of them. I'm Ken to keep trying with the hopes of a monster king, though im not sure how to land such a beast....
